the ball which

Craig took the

toss but deferred its choice
until the second half be-
cause of the winds. May-
pearl received the first
kickoff but was unable
to move the ball. The
Zebras held Maypearl’s
fullback Chris Westbrook
to 24 yards on 15 carries.
Maypearl punted and
the ball rolled to the
21 yard line. Craig Thomas
ran the ball first and
gained 12 yards. Then
Byron Buckley lost four
yards. But on the third
play Byron pitched to
Monte Magness on the

left end then cut back

made their two point

the game at 8. In the

field only to fumble inside
the 10 yard line. Maypearl

on Thomas while Magness
went around the left side
with several key blockers.
He sprinted 75 yards to
the end zone and the
winning six. This was
the margin the Zebras
needed. Harald kicked
the extra point to give
the Zebras a 15 point
lead and the win.
Zebras leading the

Grandview’s seventh
grade team had a hard
time against Maypearl
last week. Due to grades
and injuries some of the
seventh graders were
moved up to the eighth
grade team. This left
the seventh grade team
without some of their
key players.
Maypearl was able
to control the movement
of the ball. This led to
two touchdowns but no
extra points. The young
Zebras were unable to
move the ball. The final
score was Maypearl 12
and Grandview 0.
Before the Grandview-
Maypearl game the Zebras
coaches explained to
the players about a must
win situation against
Maypearl. Grandview
needed to win to make
the playoffs and win by
14 or more. There could
be a three way tie for
second with Grandview,
Maypearl and Venus.
Maypearl had beaten
Venus by 21, 27-6; and
Venus had beaten Grand-
view by 7, 7-0; which
set up the margin of 14
points. The Zebras needed
to beat Maypearl by 14
or more to eliminate
a tie breaker for second
place. If Maypearl had
won or been defeated
by less than 14, they would
have made the, playoffs.
But the Zebras came

from the eight yard line
for their first six. The
extra ’point was blocked
by Jeremy Carroll. The
quarter ended with the
score 14-6.
The third quarter
was a defensive battle
as neither team was able
to score. : The Zebras
moved the ball behind
Buckley, Magness and
Thomas but fumbles or
penalties kept them from
scoring in the third.
Grandview knew they
needed to win by fourteen.
With 7:26 left in the game
Buckley made a 10 yard
run to score. The extra
point was no good. May-
pearl moved the ball to
inside the twenty. They
ran one time and passed
three times without making
a first- or scoring. Grand-
view took over with a
little more than three
minutes left in the game.
The Zebras needed to
run the clock out but
what happened next was
a shock to everyone.
Byron pitched to Craig
Thomas but Mike Terry
came in and picked off
the pitch. He went into
the end zone untouched.
Their kick was no good.
Grandview was only ahead
by eight points.
Maypearl then kicked
the ball out of bounds.
On their next kickoff
the Zebras called a re-
verse. Magness plays
on the line on kickoffs.
He turned and ran toward
remained. Craig Thomas
broke into the end zone
on a 20 yard run. Harald
Johnsen kicked the extra
point and the Zebras led
by 14.
In the second quarter
the Zebra stalled a couple
of times when they should
have scored. Maypearl
hit a 40 yard pass to Jody
Fletcher. This set up
the Panthers from the
six yard line. They were
unable to move the ball
running, so they threw
a slant pass to Fletcher
