Teacher Institute.
The Cameron county teachers'
institute is still in session and the
teachers are doing good work
They recognize in the institute
thoroughly practical school
instruction which the better
them for their duties in instructing
those upon whom will soon devolve
h stern duties of citizenship.
Onlv the practical side of schoo!
work is taken up theoretical
methods being laid aside. Superin-
tendent Goodrich is ably assisted
in the work by Misses Lily Mielke
and Clara Fernandez. This morn

this all important subject.
An incident occurred this mom
ing which while not on the pro
cram was none the less interesting
and showed the appreciation of the
attending teachers for the efforts
of Superintendent Goodrich in
making the institute a.pleasant and
profitable one. This was the
presentation of a beautiful gold-
headed came with the inscription
"E. H. G. Jan. 25 1906" en-
graved thercou. Miss Kate Ed-
wards of Santa Maria made the
presentation speech in a very
pleasant manner and when Mr.
Goodrich had recovered his breath
he assured the donors of his sincere
appreciation.
The afternoon and instead of a
feeling of extreme gladness that
the work is over the teachers will
return to their respective school
wuh a tinge of sadness that so
pleasant and profitable an occasion
lias come to a close.
I There has been a great revolu-
tion in institute work during the
pu.M lew years the theoretical and
useless being gradually eliminated
ing so frequent. The yield here
is considerably greater than in
PLouisiana "where the average is
about 20 tons per acre while here I
the average is from 30 to 35 tons j

guments for this section and their
truth has been demonstrated to ;
the entire satisfaction of all who j
have investigated the matter. j
Mr. Caffery was lor two years a
resident of the great Lone Star
State being located in Grayson
county and had visited every
portion of the state except the
Brownsville country perhaps
reserving the best for the last.
The entire party say things look
good to them here and' Senator
Caffery savs if he can rake up the
scrapsof a life almost spent he
might decide to make his home in
the Brownsville country provided
thejrheuniatisin would allow him to
live in peace here. The Herald
hopes the party may all decide to
locate here and in behalf of our
best citizens extends to them a
heartv welcome to the lower Rio
Grande.
Tomorrow thev will visit other
interesting sections near Browns
ville and hunt ducks.

Improved Mail Service.
Postmaster Sharpe has received
instructions from the postmaster
g3neral that on and after Feb. 3
1906 the overland mail route from
Brownsville to Hidalgo will be
discontinued. After above date
mail will go by train as follows:
Railway Station Lonsboro to
Santa Maria.
Railway Station Donna to Pro
greso.
Railway station McAllen to Hi
dalgo.
Railway station Donna to Run?
Ever since the completion of the
railroad to Brownsville and For
dycetherehasbeen more or less coin
plaint on account of mail facilities
in the section affected by the pro
posed change and the new ar-
rangement will be a welcome and
beneficial one to all concerned.
The Herald congratulates its
neighbors on the improved facil-
ties-
The matter of a rural delivery
from Brownsville for the section
which will be left without mail fa
cilities by the above changes has
been taken up with the depart-
ment and will doubtless soon be
satifaclorily arranged.
The Cult of Silence.
Now to keep one's freshness
there ought to be zone of - silence
around every human being during
some part or every day. It is
significant that the great religions
f the world have come out of
silence and not not out of noise
and the finest creative work is
done as a rule in seclusion not
necessarily apart from men nor iii
and a thoroughly practical course ! solitary places but away from the
where actual methods of instruc-1 tumult and away from distracting
sounds.
It is silence alone that we come
in-in possession of ourselves. Tne
noises of life disturb us as a cloud
of dust intervenes between the eye
and the sky. There ought to be
a cult for the practice of silence
a body of men and women com-
mitted to the preservation of the
integrity of their souls by neither
hearing or making speech for
certain periods pledged to the
culture of the habit of quietness.
Maeterlinck has pointed out the
fact that the best things are never
spoken and the truest intercourse
between congenial spirts is carried
on without words. If we said less
and thought more there would
be far fewer things to explain
many sources of irritation would
be dried up at the sources and the
prime cause of irritation which is
nervous exhaustion or excitement
would be removed. The Outlook-
tion are taken up has taken the
place of long-winded essays etc.
which made the mere mention of
institute a dread to the aveiage
teacher. Those who have attended
the ptcsent session feel that the
week ha been well spent and

Prominent Visitors.
Ex-Senator Don Caffery his son
Frank and Arg Ehrhart of
Franklin La.; are among the late
prominent visitors to Brownsville.
They are down on a prospecting
and hunting tour and will be here
several days. Mcssrss. Caffery are
prominent sugar growers of Louis-
iana and of course have their eyes
nnci . for lands suitable for
oane-cjotving. In company with
Col. U- Lott and Jno D. Hill the
gentlemen visited the Blalack
f-rm. and were much pleased with
the development in progress there.
r- -'-t-r- r. Caffery informed
Tr.v. Herald representative that
he found the land exceptionally
fertile and from a casual observa-
tion thinks its adapted to a variety
of products. He is of opinion

Traveler and Native.
The traiu had stopped for coal
and water.
"Neat little town you've got
here" remarked the traveler in
the checked suit who had stopped
out on the station platform for a
breath of fresh air.
"You ain't got no copyright on
that" replied the native who was
sitting on the goods box.
"So far as I can see" rejoined
the passenger slightly nettled
that his overture had been received
so coldly "the town looks a great
deal better than its inhabitants."
"You can't tell anything about
a town by the folks you see hang-
ing around the depot any mor'n I
can tell what kind of cattle's on a
train by hearin' one of the steers
bawl when it gets prodded a bit"
said the other meditatively.
"Got any schools here?"
"A few."
"I wouldn't have suspected it."
"Oh yes; we turn out a lot o'
ejicated fools every year same as
the' do where you come from."
"I see and some uneducated
fools."
"Yes sir; but we make travelin'
men out of 'em."
"Got a few hopeles idiots. too
haven't you?"
"Quite a sprinklin' of 'em.
Was" you thinkin' of settling down
here an' jinin' 'em?"
"Not at all- I don't like the
snecimens as far as I've seen
them."
"You'd be lonesome among 'em
anyway. The are not talkin'
ijuts."
"Well I'll be frank enough to
say you're not one of them."
"You're pretty smart. Pardon
me. but have you got a chew of
tobacco about you?"
"Sure-"
"Then will you oblige me by
closing your mouth with it? Good
eye."
