A question which has been:
worrying the immigration author-
ities of the Southwest and which
they declare is of infinitely mare
importance to Texas than the ques-
tion of Chinese immigration is the
invasion into this country of
Syrians.
How all of them ever get into
this country is more than anyone
is able to understand but many of
them refused admittance at the
Mexican border do get across the
line are protected and aided by
Syrians living in this section
through whom they make their
way to the North
Over 100 Syrians have been re
jected at the border because of
disease when thev came to the-
United States border. The disease.
an affection of the eye known as
trachoma is particularly malignant
and becomes contagious by contact .
It is of Oriental origin but since
the invasions of Syrians into this
country some few citizens of the
United States have become infected
with it. The patient becomes
totally blind within a short time
a"fter he has contracted the malady.
Because of the difficulties the
immigration agents have to en
counter on the border the Immi
gration Department at Washington
may be asked to extablish a service
at Veracruz and other points in
Mexico.
A similar service is in force at
ports in Canada and the agents at
those places have been successful
in keeping out a large number of
undesirable immigrants.
The greater number of Syrians
who make application for admis-
sion at Laredo Eagle Pass
Brownsville or El Paso are reject-
ed. Undaunted by this rejection
they take a course of medical treat-
ment for a week or two and make
application again. If they are re-
fused they try to get past the im-
migration guards.
This is comparatively easy oil
the border but they have a hun-
dred miles of semi-arid territory
to cross without stopping at a
town before they are safe into the
interior. If they get past San An-
tonio they are safe. Many are
caught here and deported. Many
are harbored by the Syrians
here and at towns between here
and the border.
Recently two Syrians were re-
ported to have got past the inspec-
tion offices on the border. The
next heard of them they were at
Milano. An effort was made to
apprehend them but they had
worked their way so far into the
interior they could not be detect-
ed. One Syrian is repoited to have
walked nearly 400 miles through
almost a desert country from the
interior of Mexico crossing the
Rio Grande about midway between
Laredo and El Paso and making
his way into the interior of the
United States.
It is reported that many Syrians
who are rejected on the Atlantic
seaboard return to Europe and
secure passage to Veracruz and
from there they wotk their way
northward tbrouyh the United
States. There is a case on record
where a Syrian was rejected at
New York and was deported.
From Liverpool he took- passage la
Veracruz and next showed up at
an interior town in Massachusetts
having crossed the Atlantic Occeau
twice and the length of the Con-
tice of the meeting. This will bt-
done with no expense to iiidividu.il
business men.
