C P Y JOHN D. MORHAN Dec. 1st, 1953 My Dear fir. Kempner: You may have some difficulty in deciphering this attempt at writing, but after 5 weeks spending 24 hrs. on my back today the Doctor has permitted me to have h periods of one hour each in the chair. As you may well imagine I am a little wobbly. But my very first attempt was to drop a line to you. You and yrs. Kempner have been part of my daily prayers. As I mentioned to you on my last visit God was merciful that he did not give understanding to all, but only those that went thru the heartbreaking experience of losing a son. All of our friends are very sincere in their expressions of sympathy but fortunately for them they do not have understanding. All doctors will disagree with me, but I know that you will permanently feel a void - an empty space around your heart, which will serve as a constant reminder that whereas your mortal contacts with your beloved son have ended, you still have him spiritually with you both. It was indeed a tragedy to have him cut down right at the prime of life but the power to cure and to take life rests in God's hands. There is nothing that could be said or done to change the fatal result. Your loss is measured commensurate with your love. No words, nothing can bring him back to you and his family. Be grateful to Uod that you had such a fine boy as a son, be grateful to %od that he did not take him from you sooner. With a perfect body, a fully developed mind and a most lovable personality. With those thoughts may God give you consolation.always. As ever, John What I should have mentioned in the beginning I now find it comes last. Your note to me at the Hospital. I read it while under the oxygen tent and it did more for me to get well than all of the Doctors and nurses. Please accept my sincere thanks. ith your moral support behind me I will win this battle as I have all previous ones. May God grant you peace of mind. John
