A party of fourteen prospectors
came to Brownsville a tew days
t r i
ago ana remamea over mgni.
Next morning they gathered their
grips and started for the depot.
On the way they were met by a
citizen of Brownsville wno naa
met them on the train on their way
down here. On inquiring their
destination the aforesaid citizen
was informed they were going
home. He remonstrated urging
the fact that they had had no op-
portunity to see anything of the
couutry. What do you think the
visitors said? Well they said
'Your town has no waterworks
and no electric lights and we do
not care to stay." The answer
floored the Brownsville man and
lie naa no more to say. is auy
comment necessary?
Letters postal cards and every
other known means of communica
tion are commiug by the armful
asking for information concerning
the. Brownsville country. They
will all receive prompt attention.

citizens want to know what to ex-
pect. Fig Cultivation.
As soon as the ground has been
placed in a good state of cultiva-
tion the-rows should be laid off in
checks twelve feet each way. Or
dinary switch cuttings can be used
in planting the orchard. These
should be put early in December.
The cultivation of the Sg is simple
and inexpensive: in fact so well
suited is it to this country that it
does fairly well with no cultiva
tion at all. A cultivation that will
keep down the weeds and grass
and at the same time keep tne
soil loose is all that is required
for the growing fig tree. Until the
orchard comes into full bearing
some low growing crop Unsti or
sweet potatoes cabbage cucumbers
or melons) will be both benencial
to the orchard aiid profitable to the
owner. It will be found' that this
cultivation hastens the growth in-
creases the strength and adds to
the longevity of the trees.
With proper cultivation these
little trees will begin to bear some
the third year and the fifth year
will yield an abundant harvest. It
is well known that the fig is less
sensitive to varying climatic con
ditions than any other fruit known
to our horticulture and it has

fewer enemies in the insect and
fungus world. An failure in a fig
crop is unknown; in fact it is as
sure as death or the maturity of a
crop.
The figs will begin to ripen in
June and the crop will them be
continuous until frost.
Pieces of old iron buriea about
the trees at planting will be bene-
ficial to the trees and a great aid
to the flavor of the fruit.
It will be found advisable to
prune the sprouts the first spring
after planting so that the branch-
ing will commence from a foot to
eighteen inches from the ground.
When the trees come into full
bearing it will be found exceeding-
ly profitable to mulch the orchard
annually. A coat of weeds grass
leaves spoiled hay or rice will keep
the soil moist keep down vegeta-
tion in the orchard and serve as
a perpetual fertilizer. This mulch
should be removed each summer or
autumn. Rice Journal and South-
ern Farmer.

The readers of this paper will be pleas-
ed to learn that there is at least
one dreaded disease that science has
been able to cure in all stages and
that is Catarrh. Hall'sr Catarrh Cure is
the only positive cure now known to the
tnadical fraternity. Catarrh being a
constitutional disease requires a consti-
tutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure
is taken internally acting directly upon
the blood and mucous surfaces of the
system thereby destroying the founda-
tion of the disease and giving the
patient strength by building up the con-
stitution and assisting nature in doing
its work. The proprietors have so much
faith in its curative powers that they
offer One Hundred Dollars for any case
that it fails to cure. Send for list of
testimonials. Address:

Voluminous Railway Tickets.
Germany has just revised its
railway tariff which involves a
multiplicity of tickets. It is cal-
culated that a traveler with a small
family going from Muelhausen to
Basel will find himself furnished
with sixty tickets in addition to
which are the baggage tickets. A
family ought to arrive early at the
station to receive and control so
large a number of documents.

State Board of Education Receives Es
timstes of Available School fund
Receipts.
A dispatch froiti Austin under
date of August 1 says:
At a meeting; of the State Board
of Education today the Comptroller
and State Treasurer submitted es-
timates of the'receipts of the availa
ble . school fund for the next
scholastic year as follows:
From tax roll $2500000
Fromlandsales and leases 1000000
From interest on bonds-
From occupation taxes.
From Bowser bill
500000
250000
80000
35000
5000
From Kennedy bill
From school tax unorgan-
ized counties
From estimated balance
in treasury October 1
1906
85000
Total $445500
The total estimated scholastic
population of the State for the
same period is 870515 or an in-
crease of 71840 over the scholastic
population of last year. This in-
crease in scholastic population is
due to the new law which requires
enumeration of the children be-
tween 7 and 8 years of age.
Today the State board declared
a per capita apportionment of $5
for the scholastic year beginning
September 11906 and ending
August 31 1907. This $5 ap-
portionment for each of the 870515
scholastics agregates $4352515
and exceeds the total amount ap-
propriated last year by $159-
531.25. If the receipts should later
justify it a supplemental ap-
portionment will be made by the
State Board of Education.
I think the vacation habit is the
outgrowth of abnormal or distorted
business methods. I tail to see
anything legitimate in it.
