Tonight the weather man says
will be partly cloudy. Sunday
will see scattered showers with
light southerly winds.
As an evidence of the amountof
freight handlea by the Gulf Coast
Line ten cars of local merchandise
were received here yesterday after-
noon. The river has fallen several
inches since yesterday and ths
hope is expressed that after a four
weeks' rampage it will soon assume
the normal.
The democratic and republican
county conventions were held at
3 o'clock this afternoon but too
late for any reports for this after-
noon's paper.
A bunch of twelve Mexican cot
ton pickers left this morning for
Gonzales county where they have
been promised 50c per 100 for
picking cotton.
S. C. Tucker. of the People's Ice
company is mourning the loss of
his family buggy horse which
died yesterday. The cause of death
is supposed to have been too much
dry feed.
- J. L. Landrum arrived in the
city yesterday evening from his
ranch near Santa Maria and says
the river had fallen about four
inches at 4 oclok yesterday after-
noon. Wanted to buy; Large body of
land that can be irrigated from Ar-
tesian wells or near pumping sta?
tion or on river near railroad suit-
able for raising sugar cane and
having good location for sugar re-

ville last evening by way of the
Mexican National The Herald
man was pleased to meet W. J
Carnohan general superintendent
of the Gulf Coast Line who has
been touring Mexico for several
days on a pleasure trip. Mr.
Carnohan is much improved in
health and says he could not have
enjoyed the trip more unless he
had stayed longer. Mr. Carnohan
left this morning for Kingsville
where he will resume the duties of
superintendent with remewed vi-
gor. The Herald is sorry 'to report
the death of Mrs. Felipitas Cham-
pion aged 70 years which ocurr-
ed at 9 o'clock this morning at La
Florida ranch in Hidalgo county.
She was well and favorably known
in this county and was from one of
the oldest and most highly respected
families of this section. She was
the mother of Peter and .Andrew
Champion and leaves a large
circle of relatives and friends
besides the immediate family. To
the survivors The Herald extends
' its most sincere sympathy in their
loss. The funeral will take place
at La Florida tomorrow morninr.

Miss Lilly Mielke is spending
today in the city from the Point.
W. P. Gano of Sarita was an
incoming passenger yesterday af-
ternoon. Miss M. Hicks returned this
morning from a few days stay at
the Point.
Mr. and Mrs. John Closner went
down to Point Isabel yesterday
afternoon.
Miss Hattie Case has returned
from a several weeks stay at the
Stillman ranch.
J. M. Munholland of Monroe
La. was an arrival in the city on
the midday train.
James Lockhart merchant at
Harlingen was transacting busi-
ness in Brownsville today.
Chas. Champion the Point Isa-
bel merchant was among the pas-
sengers coming up this morning.
M. H. Holloway spent today in
Erownsville from his ranch up the
river returning home this after-
noon. T. F. Jones of the Sah Antonio
Daily Express was among the
arrivals in Brownsville yesterday
afternoon.
E. L. Caldwell of Corpus Chri-
ti left on the 3 o'clock train for a
business trip to the Rio Grande
City country.
Duval West esq. attorney for
the Gulf Coast Line is in the city J
and weut to" Point Isabel yesterday
afternoon for a short visit . ;
E. Grieg the well known civil
engineer who has been at work
in Hidalgo for some time came
down on the noon train today. ;
J.D.Mitchell of Victoria who
is investigating the boll weevil for
the United States government ar-
rived in the city at noon today.
Antonio Gutierrez Pena a well
known traveling man of Laredo
who has been in Brownsville sev-
eral days was a passenger out this
morning.
Mrs. A. August and son of
Halletsville who have been visit-
ing the husband and father here
the past two months left for home
this morning.
E. L. Caldwell the Corpus
Christi hardware salesman spent
last night at Point Isabel and the
cool gulf breeze made him think or
home sweet home.
F. Snipes of the Snipes Depart-
ment store returned ' yesterday
afternoon from a mouth's visit to
the New York markets where he
purchased a full line of goods for
his trade-
Miss Lightfoot ofLyford was
an arrival in the city yesterday af-
ternoon. Her father is station agent
at Lyford and Miss Lightfoot has
accepted the position of operator
at Olmito. She left for her new
home this monr'ng.
Mrs. Jno. D. Hill returned yes-
terday afternoon from an absence
of several weeks. A part of the
time was spent in the old home at
Lousville Ky. and a visit to her
son Frank and wife at Houston
was also very much enjoyed.
A. Turk the Washington street
merchant returned yesterday
afternoon from San Antonio where
he has been the past few days
buying goods. He will move soon
to the building at the corner of
Washington and 12th street which
has recently been fitted up for his
occupancy. The new stand is very
desirably located.
Mrs. C. B. Kenedy returned '
home last night from Corpus
Christi where she had been spend-
ing several weeks. She was ac-
companied home by her nieces
Misses Beatrice and Maria Samano
of Hidalgo and her niece and
nephew Sarah and Aldus Young
of Santa Anita who will visit her
for a few days. Laredo Times

A. B. Wolcott field agent for
the Chicago Academy of Sciences
who has been spending several
days in Brownsville and vicinity
collecting specimens was an out-
going passenger this morning. He
is very well pleased with his sue-'
cess here and says he found sev- j
eral interesting specimens " not
found elsewhere in the United
States. Mr. Wolcott's work was
considerably interfered with by
the river having overflowed the
bottoms and submerging many
localities which would have proven
rich in specimens in which he was
interested. His work was con-
fined mostly at La Esperanzas
the plantation of L. A. Jagou.
