Just received a car-load of Irish
potatoes at Louis Kowalski's.

A dance for Friday night is
being gotten up by the young men
of the town.
Weather: Tonight showers;

A contractor left for Raymond-
ville this morning with five laborers
whd will do grubbing.
Three bricklayer left on the-3
o'clock train for Harlingen where
they ajready have employment.

Nine laborers were sent out on
this evening's train by Timoteo
Castaneda to his son at Lonsboro
to be used on the Canal work.
F. W. Boss is Busily engaged
today in moving his household

Walter Roussett who has for
some time been running a barber
shop in front of the Miller hotel
has closed his shop and will try
his hand at farming. The Her
ald wishes him all manner of
success.
Posters were circulated this
morning advertising a meeting of
subscribers and citizens to be held
. in the district court room tomor
row morning at 10 o'clock for the
purpose of discussing the matter
of water and lights.
Saturuay night marked the thir-
ty fifth anniversary of the organi-
zation of the club "Matamprense"
in Matamoros and the occasion
was duly celebrated with an elabor-
ate ball. A number of prominent
Brownsville people were invited
and present at the function and
report a magnificent affair.
From persons at the ferry we
learn that quite a good deal of
vegetables are being brought across
for our markets. These vegetables
are grown further in the interior
along the M. & M. and shipped to
Matamoros. What a sad reflec-
tion on the industry of our truck
farmers and market gardeners.
The King's Daughters are plan-
ning a Halloween party which will
doubtless be one of the gayest
social events of the season. Many
delightful and novel attractions are
being prepared by the young ladies
in charge of the entertainment and
an evening of genuine amusement
is assured. Particulars will appear
later.
News has just been received
from an authentic source that
within a very short time Fort
Brown will be ..regarrisoned and
with a larger force than before.
There have been talk and rumors
heretofore to this effect but this is
the first intimation from a source
so high coming in the form of an
unqualified assurance.
Will Benton manager of Piper
Bros immense truck farm was in
to-see us this morning. He reports
crops in a flourishing condition
says he has 20 acres of cabbage
plants in the field and will have a
hundred acres more as soou as he
can got them out; also has five
acres of asparagus and expects to
sat out fifteen acres more as soon
as possible.
The private immigration car
Isabel came -to. Saturday night
having on board a 'party of people
who ;had been Induced to came and
see the wonderful resources of the
Brownsville country. The excur-
sion reached Corpus Christi with
29 on board 12 stopped at Corpus
six at intermediate stations and
eleven reached Brownsville. After
spending all yesterday riding and
driving over as much of the country
as time would permit the party
returned to the car last night and
left on this morning's train. The
personnel oi the party is asfollows:

Wyoming; P. E. and S. K. Hum-
phrey St. Louis Mo.; W. J.
Schliletz Wisconsin; Frank H.
Day and Thos. C. Hood Chicago;
Mrs. F. E. Dauner Indianapolis;
F. E. Hill Chicago; F. B. Ayers
and wife Iowa. Mesdames Ayers
Sill and Dauner will remain here a
few days longer.
Gus. N. Votauy of Glenflora
Texas who has been in town sev-
eral days securing laborers to do
some construction work in his
country finally succeeded in lin-
ing up forty who for a considera-
tion were wiling to lend them-
selves and their services to his
cause and were on the platform
awaiting him this morning about
train time. On going in to the
agent to see about transportation
which his people were to send him
he found somewhat to his surprise
that there was nothing doing for
him so not having the money him-
self or not wishing to invest some
"$500 in that manner he declined
to purchase tickets for the crew but
made them a nice well worded
speech explaining the matter and
asked them to meet him again in
the morning at train time.
The sale given by the ladies of
the Methodist and Presbyterian
Churches Saturday evening was
quite a creditable affair and well
patronized. The proceeds were
something like $25.

J. Wayne Greer- of Alvin
Texas was an arrival on Saturday
evening's train and is registered at
the Miller.
Miss Irene Putegnat left on this
morning's train for a visit to her
sister Miss Sunie who is teaching
at La Parra.
Dr. J. F. Eaves came in Satur
day evening from Rockport and
will be here several days on quar
antine business.
W. E. Greten and J. Dunn of
Minneapolis Minnesota came in
Saturday on a prospecting trip and
are looking about-
Frank Lopez after spending
a couple of weeks here with home
folks left this morning for his head
quarters at Jennings La.
Wm. Briggs of the Hidalgo
Irrigation company came in Sat
urday evening and left Sunday on
the M. & M. for Hidalgo.
J. H. Edwards of Hidalgo is in
town just returned from San An-
tonio where he has been for several
days on important business.
Col. Uriah Lott came down Sat
urday night from Corpus where he
has been in the interests of his
road aud spent Sunday with his
family.
Edgar Hicks with his sisters
Misses Lillie and Katie returned
this morning from their ranch up
the river where they have been
spending several days.
J. A. Price and wife of Emi-
nent Kansas came in Saturday
night spent Sunday looking
around and left on this morning's
train. They were impressed and
expect to return shortly.
W. J. McDonald and Dave
Maltby came in last night from a
day's hunting up the river some
seven miles and as a result of the
day' sport brought in 61 ducks
of the teal variety. They say they
are satisfied they killed as many as
150 but owing to the brush aud
deep water brought in only a piti-
ful 61. This is indeed a duck
story but several persons saw the
61. .
Miss Lottie B. Smith who has
been spending the summer iu Colo-
rado came home Saturday even-
ing. She and her brother ifeKyle
are engaged in a wholesale drawn
work business here and expect to
go to work right away.
S. O. Tansill of Savannah Mo.
was an agreeable caller at The
Herald office this morning. Mr.
Tansill says that he has come here
to look at the country and means
to see it before he leaves- It is
apparent at once iu talking with
him that he means business and if
some landowner will give him a
square deal we will have him for a
citizen before the year isended.
