Now the situation gets funny. The AMT (Alternative Minimum Tax)
was a brainchild of the Democrats back in the late 1960's and like a lot of
their tax schemes this one has their tail in the gate. It was specifically
designed to get 21 high income tax pay ers w ho paid no income tax in 1967.
It worked great in 1969 w hen the free riders had to pom up some income
tax. However as incomes rose, more and more middle class tax payers got
snagged by the ATM. Unhappy tax payers do not vote for those who raised
their taxes. soo the democrats demanded a tax cut for these poor rich tax
payers. Do you see the irony? In the House Chas Rangel almost had appro-
plc.xy because the House bill did not include AMT relief. I have not seen a
copy of the finished bill that passed just before the Christmas vacation, but
it is readily apparent that the liberals will have an issue in the elections later
this year. Hillary will be able to run as a moderate instead of a as a liberal.
It worked for Bill, why not for Hillary?

There is one other issue that can have an effect on the fall elections.
That is the guilty plea this past week by a lobbyist that admitted that some
of his tactics were somewhat less than legal or even moral. He lias named
names and has agreed to cooperate with the investigators. The interesting
thing is that he named both Republicans and Democrats. If you doubted that
our politicians are on the take. follow this case very closcly.
It is going to be an interesting year and there may yet be some additional

And we thought crimes of the day were worse, than they
were years ago, but these stories prove that thought wrong. This
is the end ofthe crimes of Johnson County.
I am sorry that I did not know of the deaths of Joyce
Ferguson and Pauline Martin, before I printed my column last
week. I just want to state that these two women were certainly
precious people that I had known most of my life and offer my
sincere sympathy to their families.

this couple, that rode into old Grand View and stopped at the
Scurlock Store and bought provisions for their journey. The day
was a stormy one in May with black clouds and rain roaring
into the small settlement before dark. The couple seemed to
have traveled a long time and were seeking a place to stay for
the night and provisions to continue their travels. Many stories
have been told and much spectulation into who the couple were
and why they chose Grand View to stop. They were asked to

explosion. "Go, to hell," was the reply as: burglar fired a shot

Lots of interest was shown in the 1908 trial of Mart Black, ■

ted after the jury was out two days in the hotly fought case.
