GULF COAST LINE
TO VELASCO.
Rumor
That BrowruWille Road Will Use
I. & G. N. Into. Houston.
The correspondent of the Post
at Velasco wires his paper as fol-
lows: General Manager Jeff N. Miller
of the St. Louis Brownsville and
Mexico railroad came in yesterday
afternoon in 'his private car and
spent the night at the Surfside
hotel.on the gulf.
Colonel Morgan Jones arrived
several' days ago and has been
busy looking after matters here.
Colonel Jones met Manager Miller
at Angleton and returned with
him. They have been in close
conference since his arrival and
nothing has been given out as to the
meaning of the meeting.
However it is supposed to- have
something to do with the Coast
Line road runing trains over the
r Velasco road. A rumor has been
started that the Brownsville . line
would go into Houston over the
International and ' the" Velasco
route? . .

The San Benito Canal.
The hotel reporter of the Hous- j
ton Post has this to say about
San Benito:
S. A. Robertson of Brownsville
who is the engineer in charge of
the construction of the immense
irrigating canal for the San Benito
Lard and Water company was at
the Rice hotel yesterday on the
way home after a visit to Michigan
to look into the matter of securing
steel to be used on the canal work.
Mr. Robertson stated that the
canal which is owned by a com-
pany controlled by the Heywood
brothers of Jennings La. will ir-
rigate 45000 acres of land. The
canal comes out of 'the Rio. Gran-
dej about twenty miles above
Brownsville- The main canal will
be about eighteen miles long; and
will have about seventy miles of
laterals.
According to Mr. Robertson
about six miles of the main canal
have been completed and the re
mainder about 70 per cent com.
pleted. Of the laterals about
twenty-three miles have been com
pleted. It is expected that the
canal will be ready for operation
about October 1.
Most of the land to be irrigated
willvbe . put into sugar cane said
Mr. Robertson while great bodies
of jt will be cultivated in garden
truck for the Northern markets.

Such talk mates sentiment for the
building and establishment of a

graft flourish but .there is really
no serious cause for bejng alarmed
