When a WAVE “housekeeper” marries a Ship’s Cook, who does the
cooking at home? That’s a problem for Peggy Skanse, Specialist (U),
third class, and Wyckleff R. Rigsby, Ship’s Cook, second class, at the
U. S. Naval Training Station at San Diego, Calif. They were married
after a romance that began when Peggy discovered Rigsby was responsible
for the excellent cuisine in the WAVES’ mess hall. If Rigsby is elected
to supervise the culinary department at home, he’ll have to learn how to
pare down recipes for 1,000 servings to the correct proportions for two.
This romance is very complimentary to the food served WAVES, but at
Navy Recruiting Stations and Offices of Naval Officer Procurement
they’ll tell you the excellent cuisine is only a minor reason for enlisting
in the WAVES. The important thing, they say, is that women between
20 and 36, without children under 18, can serve their country during this
war in no better way than in the ranks of the WAVES.

days.
2. If you want to bring your food
and do your own work, our facili-
ties are available to you and Mrs.
Minter will give instructions on
the methods of procedure- It would
be best to prepare the food before
bringing it to the school, but a
place is available if you care to
prepare it at the center. All of this
service is without charge- For rea-
sons of safety, this center cannot
permit canning foods except in
methods that have been tested
and are approved by the govern-
ment specialists. This is for the
protection of the foods canned by
the public.
3. A second plan has been pro-
vided which will assist some of the
people who do not have the time
to do the work, and also provide
food for the school lunchroom. If
you care to have us do all of the
work, this is the plan: Bring your
food and cans to the school and
our labor will prepare and can it
for you. For this service, one-half
of the canned food will be left
for the school lunchroom. The
school of course will furnish the
cans for that part that is left for
the lunch room. We will prepare
and can all of the food with this
exception: We do not have enough
labor to shell peas or butter beans.
We will snap beans, cut corn, etc.
if you want your peas shelled on
this program it will be necessary
that they be shelled before they
are brought to - the center. This
plan has been provided to assist
the school lunch room and also
provide a means of serving those
people in the community who do
nob have the time to do their own
work and yet want to avail them-
selves of a canning program for
their needs. Mrs. James Billups
has been employed to supervise the
preparation and assist in the can
ning of the food for the lunch '
room.
4. Regardless of which program
you plan to use, it is essential
that you notify Mrs. Minter at
least twenty four hours prior to
the time you plan to use the pro-
’ gram in order that she make
provisions for the work. You may
call Mrs. Minter either at 276 or

Mr. Lester and Miss Keller will be
present to ••test the guages of can-

very necessary that guages be in
