Destroying the Giant's Causeway.
The famous "Giants' Causeway''
in the north of Ireland is suffering
the fate of the New Jersey palisades
overlooking the -Hudson for it is
in the hands of stone merchants.
A consignment of 200 tons of the
basaltic columns comprising the
Causeway has recently been ship-
ped to Philadelphia. It will be asked
whether there is no power in Ire-
land to protect the Causeway. Al-
though at one time it was suppos
ed to be the work of the giants I
who abounded in Ireland and to
whom a piece of construction about
a furlong in length would be
child's play it is not in a legal
sense an ancient monument. The
Irish courts decided that the stones
belonged to a company and since
that time the causeway or pier
cannot be seen without payment.
It may therefore be assumed that
the disposal of the basalt is a legal
transaction. America is fast be-
coming a great museum and it
will be- incomplete unless several
of the natural as well as the artistic
"curiosities" of Europe are to be
found here. Scientific American.

JAPANESE IMMIGRAANTS
WERE EXCLUDED.
Interesting Time at Immigration Head
quarters Today Mexican Trachoma
Cases Refected Also.
The Brownsville immigrant in-
spection force had a rather interest-
ing time this morning when three
representatives of the Flowery
Kingdom of Japan marched sober-
ly up the walk at the ferry and
made application for admission into
Uncle Sam's domain. As none of
the inspectors can understand even
one little word of Japanese and as
the almond-eyed applicants are
equally innocent of any knowledge
of English there was considerable
trouble in exchanging communic&3
tions between the two parties. One
of the Japs knew a very few words
of Spanish and from him it was
gathered that they came from Mon-
terey where they have been work
ing apparently in the brewery.
They had the word "beer" down
in their vocabulary all right.
Physically and financially they
turned out to be acceptable immi-
grants but as they did not show
any passports and could not be
made to understend that these
magic papers are 'necessary before
any Japanese can enter here there
appeared nothing else to do but to
exclude them. They seemed to be
absolutely in the dark as to the
meaning- of the word passport. As
instructions hare been issued to all
immigration authorities to treat
the Japanese with every considera-
tion and to do nothing that may
hurt their feelings due no doubt
to the somewhat strained relations
between the two nations the in-
spectors were somewhat at -a loss
as to do with the applicants who
nfay have passports . but did not
understand that they must present
them. It was finally decided how-
ever that they should be excluded
and they were politely but firmly
made to understand that they must
return to Mexico beveral nours
were devoted to the consideration
of. the case and' it was half past
two when the would-be immigrants
took passage on the ferry boat back
to Mexico.
One of them raised a laugh on
the part of the inspectors by grave
ly approaching one of them and
offering him a fifty dollar bill
making it known by signs that it
was a bribe to let them pass.
It is thought by some that these
are only the xvan guard of a large
number of Japs who have been re-
fused admission at other points
ana wno are nere io prospect as to
chances of getting through.
Two young Mexican men hav-
ing tracnoma were aiso rejected
today by the inspectors.
Jap Sign of Fidelity.
"The Japs are a fine race" said
a globe trotter "but there's one
thing about them I don't like. The
married women all blacken their
teeth with a paste made out of
sweet oil and soot. When a young
married woman gives you a smile
instead of being ravished with a
glimpse las of snow on roses pearly
teeth gleaming between red lips
you look into a black hole. You
frown. You turn away in disgust.
The idea is t-iat the married wom-
en's black teeth .malrinir them un-
attractive keeps them faithful to
their husbands. Seems to me it
must have the opposite effect on
the husbands." New' York Press.
A Typical Yankee.
That Dr. Holmes was a typical
Yankee in undemonstrativeness
was Ghown in the meeting with his
son who was wounded at Chancel-
lo'psville. For many uavs he had
so.: -lit the captain on the fields and
in the hospitals and at last learned
that he was on a train that was car-
rying the wounded to Washington.
He entered the car saw the pale
face of "his woifnded boy and they
clasped hands with a "Hello cap!"
and "Hello dad!" ;
