strangers and have been for the
past feways and accordingly the
ferry between -here and Matamo-
ros is doing a land office business
carrying sight-seers over the Rio'
Grande.
Word was received from San Be-
nito ranch yesterday that Mrs
Laadrum was quite sick again and
Dr. J. K. Combe went out in an
auto to see her. She is reported as
being better today however.

A little new grand-daughter ar-
rived at the home of Rev. Dr. and
Mrs. L. R. Burress in Brownsville
yesterday to add to their Christmas
joys being born to Mr.v and Mrs.
Boyce Burress.
A noteworthy improvement is
being made by the Missouri-Kansas
Land Co. in the old office on
the corner of Elizabeth and 13th.
street which this company has
rented. The old building is being
repaired and repainted and best
of all perhaps a new sidewalk is
beingilaid
One of the most fortunate indi-
viduals in Brownsville this Christ-
mas was Charlie Starck who was
more generously remembered by
Santa Claus than most people.
Charlie's gift included a check for
a cool $500 besides a fine buggy
and a pair of horses with harness
and a fine saddle all of which were
presented by his mother Mrs. M.
V. Starck.
A telegram was received by Mrs.
H. J. Kirk notifying her of the se-
rious illness of her brother-in-law
Sidney Schuloff of Chicago. Mrs.
Kirk left for Chicago today. Mrs.
Schuloff is her youngest sister and
as there is no hope for Mr. Schu-
loff 's recovery Mrs. Kirk has gone
to be with her in her sad trial.
A good many new colonists are
arriving lately at the Chicago Gar
dens a short distance below
Brownsville which by the way is
one of the prettiest and most at-
tractive "propositions" in this vi-
cinity. House building and im-
provements in general are the or-
der of the day there.

ed quite a task.but you will find it

News has been received by the
Messrs. Kowalski of Brownsville
of the death of Mrs. S. Alexander
of Laredo who was their cousin.
Mrs. Alexander formerly resided
at Victoria Texas being related
to several well known families
there.
A number of small local items
and personals were crowded out of
yesterday's Datly Herald for
lack of time to set them.

News of the Week.
The usual number of Christmas
accidents fill the week's report.
Perhaps one of the most shocking
was that in which Jackson Stilley
aged fifty of West Elizabeth Pa.
was playing Santa Claus and try
ing to evade the eyes of the little
ones to escape detection fell down
the back stairs and broke his neck.
The saloons of Chattariooga
Tenn. remained closed voluntarily
on Christmas day and the resul t
was only nine arrests for drunken
ness against thirty for the same
offence in that city last Christmas
Nearly ten million post cards
were mailed Christmas in New
York City.
The Brussels municipal council
has halted the work on the king's
new palace" because- the building
has been found to lap over on city
property about twenty-four feet.
The architect has only a month to
set the building back.
