BROWNIES WIN FIRST
OF VICTORIA SKIUES.
Two to One Oits Score Tells Tale of
Hard-Fought Battle In Which
Champions Were Defeated.
Special to The Herald.
Victoria Texas July 26. In one
of the hardest fought and prettiest
ball games ever witnessed here the
Victoria Champions went down in
defeat yesterday afternoon in the
first of the series with the Browns
ville Brownies by a score of 2 to 1.
"Little Buster" Brown who was on
the firing line for the Brownies
pitched a wonderful game striking
out nine of the Champions. Brown
received excellent support from his
team mates the Brownies playing
like a bunch of old leaguers and
making only one error while Vic-
toria made six. While the Brownies
only succeeded in making four hits"
off of Bradford the local twirler
yet coupled with Victoria's errors
and the excellent base running of
the Brownies they succeeded in
crossing two men over home plate.
Bradford who belongs to the pitch-
ing staff of the Galveston league
team was hired by Victoria for this
game but he was unable to handle
the aggregation of "play ball boys"
from down on the Rio Grande he
striking out only five of them.
The feature of the game was the
double play made by "Little Buster"
Brown Toles and Cobolini. With a
man on first the next Victoria batter
in endeavoring to sacrifice the base
runner to second bunted the ball to
Brown who threw the base runner
out on second to Toles. The latter
quick as lightning threw the ball to
Cobolini on first in time to throw out
the batter. There was not a man
walked to first base by either pitcher.
While Bradford is one of the best
twirlers in the state "Little. Buster"
pitched rings all around him yester-
day. Victoria claims to have the
champion amateur team of South
Texas and it is admitted to be one
of the strongest aggregations of ball
players in the state but when they
went against the Brownies they hit a
hard knot for no better aggregation
of ball players has ever been gath-
ered in a town in the state of Tex-
as than the Brownies. In the game
yesterday Victoria was outgeneraled
and outplayed at every point. In field-
ing in hitting and in base running
the Brownies were superior to the
Champions and even against a
strong league pitcher like Bradford
the Brownies were able to defeat
the Champions in their own back
yard.
The batteries in yesterdays game:
for Brownsville Brown and Griffith;
Victoria Bradford and Knautt
The same teams play here this af-
ternoon and tomorrow after which
the Brownies go to Beeville.
One More Cottage Another addition
to the dwellings of Brownsville is a

Accidental Shot Quite a bit of
excitement was caused shortly af-
ternoon today by the accidental dis-
charge of a revolver in the hands
of a barber in the barber shop of
Santos Valdez on the corner of Eliz-
abeth and 12th streets. The barber
was cleaning the revolver when in
some manner it was accidentally dis-
charged the bullet entering the win-
dow casing. In a short space of time
a large crowd had gathered about
the barber shop but upon finding out
the nature of the accident soon dis-
persed. Board of Equalization The county
commissioners court met this morn-
ing as a board of equalization and
will in all probability be in session
the remainder of the week.
