STAKED PLAINS SOIL
CONSERVATION NEWS
By J. E. White
Soil scientists of the SCS have
mapped 90,000 acres of soil in Car-
son County in the last two
months. The soil is being mapped
according to slope, texture, depth,
erosion and permability.
The mapping of soils has shown
that where stubble has been left
on the land year after year the
soil is in pretty good condition and
will tend to hold more water per
foot of depth. The need for ter-
races is also pointed out pretty
dramatically because of the gullys
and silt washed down to the bot-
tom of the slope.
We need to take care of the land
and keep it productive and having
the soil mapped will point out
what is needed to keep it in good
condition.

Style, Power Mark 1958 Chevrolet Trucks
Fresh styling, more power, and many chassis improvements
mark the 1958 Chevrolet truck line. This Low Cab Forward
heavy-duty model has a new 348-cu.-in. 230-horsepower engine
designed for durability with sodium-cooled valves, heavy bear-
ings, and other heavy service features. Combustion chamber is
wholly within the cylinder bore. All 1958 Chevrolet trucks have
dual head’ ' and redesigned grille, hood, and fenders.
A major change in motor ve-
• hide safety inspection regulations
was announced this week by Col.
Homer Garrison Jr., director of
the Texas Department of Public
Safety. Garrison said the change
in regulations no longer requires
removal of a yheel in order to in-
spect the brakes of an automobile.
Regulations originally called for
removal of the wheel. That phase
of the program was rescinded.

The decision was left to the me-
chanic that happened to be doing
the inspecting and he had "no sat-
isfactory guide to follow,” Garri-
son said. Frequent arguments
with the automobile owner re-
sulted.
All motor vehicles operated in
Texas must have a safety inspec-
tion made before April 15, 1958.
Inspections began on Sept. 1, 1957..
