Mr & Mrs Joseph M. Gon-
zalez of Lawton, Oklahoma an-
nounce the engagement and ap-
proaching marriage of their
daughter J udy to Mark Murphey
of Wichita Falls He is the son of
Mr and Mrs John Murphy of
Nocona The wedding has been
research into childhood cancer and
other catastrophic diseases. Dr.
Kabisch, chairman of the bike a-
thon. stated. "Children here and
everywhere will be helped by the
progress being made at St. Jude
Hospital."
Although the temperature was
cool and local bikers had to fight
the wind, the kids did a great job.
R ollie Guinn was the long distance
biker logging in 26 miles. Most of
the 24 bikers rode 18 miles or bet-
ter. using their muscles to help less
fortunate children.
Dr. Kabisch extends a thank
you to the Nocona bikers and
reminds them to collect the
pledges and turn them in by Nov.
2 so that prizes may be awarded.
Pledges are to be turned in at the
school offices, 511 Clay, or 108 E.
Walnut.

the St. Jude Research Hospital
Bike-a-thon. The money raised

his first birthday, Saturday His
parents, Jr. and Robin Graham
invited relatives over for the occa-
sion.

mother, Bobbye York, made his
birthday cake It was a dog with a
red ball in his mouth.
Those who enjoyed cake and ice
cream along with Rowdy were; his
3 sisters, Misty. Angie. and Can
dy, his maternal grandparents

Carnival set
The Nocona Lions Club will
hold its Annual HAlloween Car-
nival Saturday, Oct. 29, beginn-
ing at 6 p.m. in the Nocona Com-
munity Center.
Various booths will include
bingo, balloon dan board, putting
booth, ring pitch, wheel of for-
tune. ball pitch, penny pitch
board, cork gun and swinging bat.

Mrs. Jimmy Tompkins, vice
president, presided in the absence
of the president
A brief business session was
held with the treasurer giving her
report.
A nominating committee was
elected to present a slate of officers
for 1984 85. Mesdames:
Ann Fitts Eise Haralson and
Flodell Armstrong were elected
The guest speaker for the program
on Texas heritage was Mrs. Jean
Hayes art teacher, historian and
lecturer. She was introduced by
Mrs. Jean Shields She is from
Wichita Falls.
Mrs Hayes received her
bachelors degree from M idwestern
University and masters from
North T exas State. This past sum
report on Outstanding Club Pro-
grams Mrs. Emily Womble’s
report on Outstanding
Americanism Day was read by
Mrs. Blair These were the only
two reports from Nocona in this
division.
On the departments reports
Mrs. Ernest Haralson gave a
report on the International Aid
Division, the only departmental
report given from Nocona.
At noon there was a catered lun-
cheon that everyone enjoyed.
The guest speaker for the day
was Senator Bob Glasgow, who
was introduced by Mrs. Robert
Elliott as an instant super star
The senator is a member of the
finance committee and chairman
of a sub committee on crime. He
complimented M rs. Pierce highly
for the work she did on the "Stop
Crime Committee He talked
about crime oil. health, and
legislative problems
Seventy-two members were pre-
sent for the meeting
in Austin.
Her main interest is Texas
history.
She quoted many interesting
events from letters left by J im
Bowie as the volunteer and Travis
of the Regular Army. These let
ters can be held by anyone who
visits the Archives Census bega i
in Texas in 1850.

Foot Wallis known in folklore
history is interesting. '
She concluded her talk by tell-
ing of a divorce in 1800 in Texas
which was not common in those
days. A wealthy landowner took
up with Sharon, a slave. She was
awarded her fair share of the land,
household goods, and 1/2 of the
slaves which included Sharon.

meeting and workshop of the
Pioneer District met in Gordon
Texas at 8:30 am
Registration, coffee, and
fellowship courtesy was provided

The meeting was formally called
to order at 9:30 am Mrs

presided. Mrs. Harry Whitsitt led
the Pledge of Allegiance to the
