Armchair Quarterback
League begins this week
The Yoakum Herald-Times Armchair Quarterback League
will kick off this week with the ever popular contest run
ning through the end of football season. This year's panel of
10 pigskin prognosticators will include last year's champion.
Lynn “Boston" Gates.
Also joining Gates from last year’s panel will be Yoakum
ISD Athletic Director Dan Burk and Herald-Times Managing
Editor Mike McCracken. Gates posted a record of 207-83
in claiming last year’s inaugural Armchair Quarterback
League title. Burk finished as runner-up ( 197-93) while
McCracken settled for 4th (194-96).
Joining the league this year will be John Muro,TDECU
Yoakum branch manager; Joe Pena, Fat Albert’s co-owner ,
Patsy Kaiser, First State Bank Secretary; Darlene Renken,
Yoakum National Bank President, Jerome Perry, YISD Em
ployee; Denise Villa, Kool Kuts ow ner; and Tammy Brasher,
Harley’s Restaurant co-owner.
The panel of football guesser’s will pick the winner of
the selected games, which will consist of high school, col-
lege and professional games.
A trophy will be awarded at the end of the season for
the top picker as well as getting their name printed on the
“Plaque of Champions” which is displayed at the Yoakum
Herald-Times office.
Also beginning this week is the U-Pick ‘Em Contest,
where readers are given the opportunity to make their
picks with a chance to win cold, hard cash

City of Yoakum Labor Day Schedule
The City Hall offices, Welhausen Library, and the Solid
Waste Management Facility will be closed on Monday, Sept. 1
in observance of Labor Day.
Residential and Commercial garbage routes as well as
yard waste route schedules will be as follows: Monday’s route
will be picked up on Tuesday, Tuesday’s route on Wednesday,
Wednesday’s route on Thursday and Thursday and Friday’s
routes on Friday. All carts should be out by 8 a m

missioners’ Court heard from
Marie Day representing the
Lavaca County Taxpayers Inc.
on concerns of the 2009 budget
proposals which are scheduled
to be adopted at the Sept. 8
meeting.
Day said the budget on
file for public inspection is
incomplete because it con
tains blanks throughout rev-
enue and expenditure items.
She said its unclear where
revenues will be received or
monies spent.
Day added that the public
