try of the Thirty-fifth Division, who

“Someone ought to tell them about
things over here. Tow we were
stripped of blankets and had summer
underwear and no overcoats for the
Argonne fight, during which wounded
men almost froze to death. No ambu-
lances for thirty -six hours and then
only six to nine small ones to haul
<800 wounded men in six days.
These ambulances frequently took
thirty-six hours to get to the field
hospital and many men died on the
way. We finally evacuated strttcher
casesby the hundred in trucks.”

The annual meeting of the Austin
Boy Scout Council was held this morn-
ing at the local headquarters over 1000
Congress Avenue. A financial report for
the year was read by W. J. Jones, the
treasurer. Reports were also made by
the scout executive, Noel P. Amstead,
and Scout Commissioner L J. Bailey.

cuses showing for only one day at a

District Attorney Salary Bill.
The House then took up considera-
tion of a bill which proposes to fix a
maximum of $6000 a year as comp*—
sation for district attorneys.
The bill, which affects only counties
with as much as 100,000 population,
proposes that office force and assist-
ant® of district attorneys are to be
paid out of the excess fees of the of-
fice. it was passed finally by the
House.
Optometry Bill Cornea Up.
Discussion of the budget system bill
was discontinued when the optometry
bill came up as special order of busi-
ness This bill proposes the licensing
of those who practice optometry, or
the fitting of eye glasses, under regu-
lations somewhat similar to those now
controlling the practice of medicine.
The bill does not propose to confer
upon optometrists the privilege of
using and selling eye medicines or the
practice of medicines. It also ex-
empts from its provisions established
businesses selling spectacles. The
board of examiners is proposed to be
supported by license fees collected.
