The South has made astounding
progress during the last sixty years.
She has made up time by leaps and
bounds, but she still has some dis-
tance to go and she should not lose
The loblolly pine, Known also as
the the old fifeld and shortleaf pine,
is one of the South’s greatest natural
resources as it grows rapidly and is
naturally adapted to large areas in
nearly all of the Southern States. its
profitableness as a crop and how it
is best grown and harvested is told in
a recent publication, ’Loblolly Pine
Primer,” Farmers’ Bulletin No. 1517-
F, issued by the Forest Service, Unit-
ed States Department of Agriculture.

southern states stand at the bottom

I should ’hold constantly before her

I take educatlenally. But while criti-
cism of t h e~So ut E*s "e due a t lonal status* ‘
is going on it might be well to rem-

I About sixty years ago the South
' was killed. She has had to build on
I
i her dead self. The most of the best of
her manhood had been slain or maim-
ed; and many of those who survived
moved to other parts of the world.
Following the surrender of General
Lee, the people of the South contem- ,
pl&ted a war-torn, battered land, I
_ grown to- weeds and -bushes, th esot
exhausted through years of produc-.
tion without fertilization, buildings j
turned, fences down, stock gone, or-
chards destroyed, labor demoralize,
money gone, and life turned topsy-
turvey. There was no time nor
means for education. The pressing
question was to keep alive. Women
and children had to go into the fields
along with the men. The war be-
tween the states turned back the
clock for the South two hundred
years.
