by Daphne Dalton Garrett
The Wendish people in Lusatia have long
been known for their artistic decoration
of Easter Eggs, and the Texas Wends have
continued this Slavic tradition. As des-
cribed in this book, three techniques
are used to make intricate designs on the
eggs: wax, scratch, and acid.
The process for decorating these traditional
Wendish Easter Eggs is given step by step in
this 36 page book. Directions are concisely
given and illustrated to allow readers to
try the method on their own.
The book describes preparation of the eggs
and the dye, the dyeing process, and the
applications of the design by the three
techniques. The wax Technique, which is
much like batik, is explained in detail.
Sample designs are included, as well as a
color photograph of eggs showing these
designs. Readers can enjoy using the
examples or inventing designs of their own.
The author is the Archivist at the Texas
Wendish Heritage Museum at Serbin, and a
researcher, writer and photographer of Texas
History. She and her husband own a farm in
the Wendish community of Warda. Mrs. Garrett
is available for lectures and workshops
on this interesting folk art.
