GTHS "Newsletter" Year 1987 Vol. 9 (IX) No. 1 (Spring)
Lisa Kahn, Tor und Tur. Fotografien von Hans P. Kuhne.
Minchen:Galerie an der Treppe, 1986.
Kinderwinter. Berlin: Stoedtner-Verlag, 1986.
Lisa Kahn's Tor und Tur is a companion piece to her previous
Baume. The poems are connected by the theme of doors and gates
and the volume is beautifully illustrated by the black and white
photogaphy of Hans Kflhne. Kahn emphasizes the role of doors in
the arrivals and departures of life, the everyday life of those
who live behind the portals, the symbolic doors of slavery,
gender and language.
Kinderwinter is a more conventional book of poetry. The poems
are arranged according to months-- January, February, March and
April. They follow a cycle from coldest winter to the awakening
of spring and cover a variety of topics from
mother-daughter relationships to Kafka's fiance, Caspar David
Friedrich to Dachau. To me some ofthe most effective lyrics are
those that concern Kahn's attitudes toward her family in
Germany:
..........Wo ist das Kind das-- nun erwachsen--
bald da sein wird wo jetzt
die Alten geschw'atzig und
gebrechlich hocken?
To be an adult where once you were a child, to see all therelatives who have aged while you were gone, to meet an extended
family when you have long been part of a nuclear one-- we have
all experienced this.
These two volumes live up to the high standard we have come to
expect from Lisa Kahn. I only have one complaint--I wish Kuhne
would have identified the places where he took the photographs
for Tor und Tur. My curiosity was aroused and not satisfied.
