Interest in Genealogy has al-

realizes the interest in tracing fami-
ly history better than those engaged
in the newspaper business. '
Hardly a week passes that some-
one doesn't drop by the Standard-
Radio Post office and seek informa-
tion from our newspaper archives.'of
relatives or friends who once lived
here or who are thought to have once
lived here.
Newspaper archives are a prime
source for such information, espe-
cially in their obituary pages. In the
early days these obituaries con-
tained information on people who
immigrated to the United States
from Germany, telling from where
they came and listing their surmi
vors.
Today these old papers are in such
fragile condition that they are not
open to public view and we send peo-
ple to the Pioneer Memorial Library
where copies ofthe paper are on mic-
rofilm.
Many local people make trips to
Germany to trace their ancestors
and some ofthemhave met with suc-
cess in their quest for knowledge Qf
their forebearers.
Church records in Germany have
been meticulously kept through the
years and are probably the best
source of information on the many
early settlers of our area who came
from there.
Now The Situation is being re-
versed with people inGermany writ-
ing to see whether we can help them
find -out what happened to peoplewho came here from Germany when
Fredericksburg was first founded. -
During the Christmas holidays we
had such an inquiry from Hubert
.Frar, whoelists his: address as
Richard Wagner-Ring 6332 Ehring-
shaus zcst Germany.
Frank wrote: "German people
from Gusternhain are interested in
the history of their village and its
former inhabitants. In 1849-53 ab-
out 50 of them emigrated to the Un-
ited States, I suppose to Texas with
the help of the Texas Verein."Pleasewould youbeso kind,"his
letter continued, "to help us find out

Getting Back To local people
seeking to check out their ancestry
there are any number of sources ot
information.
One of these is the County Clerk'S
office where vital statistics records
are kept. It wasn't until 1903 that
registering of the statistics was re-
quired. However, during the years
since the Social Security System had
been in operation many of the birtiX
records dating back to the late 1800's
have been updated.
Old ship lists that contained the'
names of those arriving on the first;
ships from Germany, along with ear-=
ly census records, are likewise im-portant.
Old church records are a valuable
source, especially the Kirchen Buch,
a church record book of the Verein'
Kirche from 1849-1870 that wan,
translated from German to the En--
glish by the late Ella A. Gold.
All of these materials are avail-
able at the Pioneer Memorial Lib-
rary which is literally a one-stop
location for those seeking informa-
tion.Genealogical Society of Kendall Co.

notes
A large number of the some 2.5
billion pages of historical records
held by U.S. state archives are
deteriorating, and measures to deal
with the situation are urgently
needed, according to a new report.
Preservation Needs in State
Archives presents the findings of a
study conducted by Howard P.
Lowell, administrator of the
Oklahoma State Archives and
Records Program, for
the National Association of
Government Archives and Records
Administrators.
The study determined that the
deterioration of the records had
resulted from such things as
substandard storage conditions and
insufficient funds.
Reevaluation of preservation
practices and expanded use of
microfilming are among the
remedies the report recommends.
Preservation Needs in State
Archives is available free from the
Council of State Governments,
P.O. Box 11910, Lexington, Ky.
40578. We Are Losing Our Past, a
brochure summarizing the 56-page
report, is also available free from
the council.Copyright 1987 German-Texan Heritage Society
