Reading the story about the
President and the way he didn't
like his painting, we felt sym-
pathetic. We never liked our
photographs either. But, after
all, we always say to ourselves:
Good looks isn’t everything. Af-
ter all, Lyndon, Abraham Lin-
coln isn't remembered particu-
larly for his good looks.
The artists used to always
follow Einstein about asking
him to sit for them and he, be-
ing a kindly man, would often
oblige them. Once in a con-
versation with a stranger on a
train, the latter asked Einstein
about his occupation. “I am an
artists' model," said Einstein.
The artists didn't choose Ein-
stein because of his good looks.
Woodrow Wilson wrote:
“For beauty I am not a star
There are others handsomer by
far
But my face I don’t mind it
For I am behind it
The people in front get the jar.”
But if nature is kind in not
exposing us to our own looks,
it is a meager kindness, for a
look in the mirror and we cor-
rect our illusions. The Scotch
poet, Robert Burns, on the
other hand, thought it would
have been better if we could
see ourselves:
“() wud some Power the giftie
gie us,
To see ourselves as others see
us."
The painter has many prob-
lems.
A phy sician once complained
to the Gierman Jewish painter,
Max Lieberman, about the
many sittings required. He
said: "I am already satisfied

Malben Expansion Plans
To Start New Programs
Tel Aviv. ( JIA »—Malben.
the health agency in Israel
sponsored by the American
Joint Distribution Committee,
will start this year several new
programs for the handicapped.
Harold Trobe. Malben s new
general director. disclosed this
week.
He said that Malben s present
activities would be maintained
and that the budget of 18,700,
000 pounds ($6,230,000)
would remain unchanged. One
major new project will be a
speech therapy school, the first
of its kind in Israel, to be open-
ed later this year at Tel Aviv
University. The school will
seek to ease the shortage of
qualified speech therapists, a
shortage which is an obstacle to
rehabilitation of stroke victims,
children who are hard of hear-
ing. and similar problems.
Another project will be an
observation and evaluation cer-
ter in Beersheba for early treat
ment and rehabilitation of han-
dicapped children. Malben will
continue to maintain more than
3,000 old persons in its homes
and to aid some 30,000 handi-
capped. chronically ill and aged
persons outside of its institu-
tions.

with the painting as you have
it. Why do vou ask me to come
for another sitting?”
"You are a doctor,” said
Lieberman, “and the difference
between the doctor and the art-
ist is that the doctor buries his
mistakes but the artist must be
more careful, for his mistakes
hang on the wall.'
Oliver Cromwell is remem-
bered for saying to his artist:
“Paint me with my warts!"
That is the hardier spirit. I
think if we only knew this of
Cromwell, and knew nothing
else, we should know that he
was a great man. Cromwell
knew that, in the last analysis,
the w arts didn't make such a
difference. W hen we begin to
think too much about our beau-
tiful looks, it is a sign that what
is really troubling us is a lack
of inner security .
We were just reading ex-
cerpts of a new book about
Sarah Bernhardt, the actress,
by Cornelia Otis Skinner. Prob-
able more has been written
about Sarah Bernhardt than
any other actress in history .
Was she beautiful? Miss
Skinner says those who knew
her say she was not so beauti-
fill, as she was able to create
the illusion of beauty . She was
always sick but always doing
something. Her theory w as that
spending energy creates ener-
gy. There was always some-
thing different with her. Now
she would be having a bear in
her home, another time she
would be sleeping in a coffin,
or going up in a balloon or
down into a mine. She tried
