CHAMBER LAUNCHES
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
The Boerne Chamber of Com-
merce launched its 1966 member-
ship drive January 13. Lee Roy
Leschper is chairman of the
membership committee and isj
directing the drive.
1965 was a fruitful year for
the new, aggressive Chamber of
Commerce. Boerne was adver-
tised in the new parts of the
state and the Chamber was ac-
tive in promoting and assisting
in local improvement activities.
The Planning Committee has
plans for the new year. The
plans can be made a reality,
states, Leschper, only if we can
increase our membership and in-
come.
The director of the member-
ship drive is asking everyone in-
terested in making Boerne a bet-
i ter place to live to join in by
ioining the Chamber and by at-
tending the monthly meetings
and taking part in our improve-
ment plan. Our city is growing
and the direction it will grow is
determined by efforts we make
now. If you do not plan now then
you have no right to complain
later.

Kurtan United Church of Christ.

KENDALL COUNTY SOIL
& WATER CONSERVATION
DISTRICT NEWS
Fences Reduce Cost
Cross fences on large pastures
helps a rancher in many ways
according to Earl Jones, mana-
ger of the Donner Corporation
Ranch located north of Berg-
heim. These fences will not only
allow a rancher to see and check
his livestock more often, reduce
labor costs, permits pasture de-
ferments and range proper use
but it will reduce breeding cost
and increase the crop of calves,
lambs and kids. Jones states, “If
I cut my large pastures into
smaller pastures, I will need less
bulls and my percent of calf
crop will increase.”
Number One Problem
Cedar is the number one
brush problem in the Kendall
County Soil and Water Conser-
vation District. It is coming
back faster than it is being
cleared. Second growth cedar,
now small, will in a few years
cover large portions of the
rangeland with heavy brush.
Cedar consumes large quanti-
ties of water that otherwise
would be available for grass pro-
duction and for recharging un-
derground water reserves. Soil
in the vicinity of cedar is not re-
ceptive to rain or water for a
surface crusting condition ex-
sts on land with a scanty grass
cover. It is a commonly known
fact that cedar consumes 5 times
as much water as grass.
A good grass cover reduces or
prevents rain splash and result-
ing soil surface crusting. Grass
cover retards water run off
with the plants and litter acting
as a protective blotter. The soil
itself will be open and crumbly
thereby able to absorb large
quantities of water quite rapidly.
Rests Pasture
R. J. “Buddy” Rose has rested
a pasture on his ranch east of
Comfort for several months now.
The grasses in this pasture have
made a great improvement dur-
ing this time.
Improves Rangeland
T. N. Smith has rested three
of the pastures on his ranch
west of Boerne. There is a large
acreage of King Ranch bluestem
grass in these pastures. During
this rest period the King Ranch
bluestem has made a good
growth and very good seed crop.
The seed produced last fall)
will help to seed additional acre-1
age by being scattered by the
wind and livestock.
BALDWIN
Died at Santa Rosa Hospital
on January 16th, Anabel Bald-
win Marriott, dear cousin of
Margaret Oxley, and schoolmate

a Requiem Mass for Anabel, in
Vientiane, Laos.
BALCONES GRANGE

mittee reports were given. The

ported that everything was

tions for six new members were

tonio. Our apology. Happy birth-
day to Annie Voges, Alvin Rein-
hard Me and Lucille Holman.

Craze, Franklin Dacy and Clar-
ence Holekamp. Other vestry-
