well-oiled machine broke down

way down in the hole to clinch the
match and move on to the finals.
Said Coen, "We completely broke

and so did we."
The Rattlers were downed by
Texas Southern 4-3, after holding
the lead for most of the game.
They were ahead 3-2, but in the
last five minutes they let in two
fast goals which turned every-
thing around. The St. Mary's
goals were scored by Miguel de
Lasa, in the first half, and by Dave
Paul and Paul Griffin in the
second half.
Finally, the team travelled to
Abilene, Texas to face Hardin
Simmons, 1-1 in a hotly disputed
game. Senior Paul Griffin scored

penalty shot, after a HSU player
stopped the ball with the hand

The St. Mary's soccer team has
played three games in the last two
weeks, losing two to Houston
Baptist and Texas Southern and
tying with Hardin Simmons.
Injuries and last minute goals
have contributed to a really
frustrating season for the
Rattlers. In the last games the
team has lost four starters due to
leg injuries. Halfbacks Jean
Claude Malatesta, Mike Carrol,
and Eric Olivos, and forward
Richard Blom are still recovering
from twisted ankles or broken
■ igaments.
Furthermore, games which
could have been won, turned out
to be last minute defeats. In the
game against Houston Baptist the
Rattlers lost in overtime 4-1, after
tying 1-1 in the ninety minute
contest. The only St. Mary's goal
was scored by junior Miguel de
Lasa in the second half.
The Lady Snakes moved on to
the Sam Houston State tourn-
ament last weekend. The
tournament was a "classy" one in
Coen's book, with a field
including Sam Houston, Texas
Lutheran College, Rice, St.
Phillips and Texas Weslayan.
