On October 16, students, fac-
ulty, and staff from St. Edward’
s University and the Austin com-
munity will be coming together,
at noon, in front of the Grotto to
show their concern on ending
hunger. Those who are not able
to attend are encouraged to ob-
serve a few moments of silence
at the same time.
This is a day of international
observance and the National Stu-
dent Campaign Against Hunger’s
major fall event. Students have
recently taken on a larger role in
the fight against hunger and have
led a variety of events to mark
World Food Day.
World Food Day was created
by the United Nations in 1979 to
focus attention on the world
hunger problem for one day each
year in the hope of prompting
year-long activity on the issue.
Last year the day was observed
in 150 countries. Over 400 cam-

puses across the United States
marked the day by holding teach-
ins, canned food drives, and
benefit parties.
To give you an idea of the
hunger problem, consider these
facts. 25 people die per minute as
a result of hunger and starvation.
More than 20 million Americans,
over one-half of which are chil-
dren and elderly, are hungry
simply because they cannot afford
to buy food. The $1.6 billion it
costs to build one Trident subma-
rine could sustain a federally
funded breakfast program for
children for 200 years.
These are just a few facts, but
you can see the pervasive ef fects
of hunger. It’s a complex problem
and it can seem overwhelming.
But, we can do something about
it by educating ourselves about
hunger, volunteering to help the
hungry in our community, or by
raising money for relief programs.
Together we can make a differ-
ence.
How safe do you feel at St. Edward's?
