State Department is confident that
the “regrettable incident” — the
shooting down by Israeli units of
British planes last week-will remain
only an incident and will not inter-
fere with truce negotiations to begin
later this week, it was emphasized
in an official statement this week.
The statement reads:
“Concerning the shooting down of
British planes by Israeli forces: Thel
State Department is receiving in-
formation concerning the inicident
from both the British and the Is-
raeli Government. We have every
confidence that, regrettable as it is,
it will be considered as a regrettable
incident only that it will not inter-

OFFICERS NAMED
FOR JOE WOLENS
ZIONIST DISTRICT
Election of officers for the en-
suing year featured the meeting
of the Joe Wolens Zionist District
of Corsicana Tuesday evening at
Agudas Achim Synagogue.
Rabbi Isadore Garsek of Ahovoth
Shalolom Synagogue in Ft. Worth
outlined the history of Zionist move-
ment. He spoke optimistically of the
future of the new-founded State of
Israel.
Plans were made for raising food
to meet an emergency situation in
Israel.
The officers, nominated by a com-
mittee headed by Abe Goldberg,
Chairman, were elected as follows:
Dan Milkes, President, re-elected.
Gus Gappelburg, Vice-President.
Irving Samuels, Secretary.
Burney Bobkoff, Treasurer.
By REUBEN HILLMAN
(President, Isadore Straus
Lodge)
As Isador Straus Lodge swings
into its new year of activities, with
new officers and Board members,
many of whom shall experience
their first efforts in the vast pro-
gram of B’nai B’rith, may we pause
in acknowledgement of the splendid;

pattern set out by the past officers
and Boards. The great progress of
Isador Straus Lodge has been recog-
nized by the District Grand Lodge
and we have been held as as a
shining example throughout the
Southwest, and justly so, in vew
of the fact that we have grown
from fifty members in 1938 to our
present membership of four hun-
dred. The responsibility for this re-
markable achievement may well be
credited to the officers and Boards
who served during the past ten
years.
It is my fervent hope that the
newly elected officers and board,
spured on by the record already in
evidence, will be inspired on to
greater goals; to greater proportions,
so that the continuity of progress
may reflect in the years to come.

Release of South African Anti-
Semite Provokes Criticism; His
Pro-Nazi Record Cited
JOHANNESBURG, (JTA) — Dis-
satisfaction with the release from
imprisonment this week of Robey
Leibrandt, notorious pro - Nazi
charged with making anti-Semitic
threats at a Transvaal resort, was
expressed here in an editorial in
the Rand Daily Mail, one of the
leading newspapers of South Africa.
“The release of a traitor does
not necessarily mark the end of ar.
unpleasant episode, which after the
lapse of some time could well be
forgotten,” the article says. “It can
also be a beginning. There is no
reason to suppose that Leibrandt
