. Ann’s than his own.
Taking care of Piper keeps him
real busy, but Haning is philosophi-
cal about it. “If I wasn’t doing this, I
wouldn’t have anything else to do,”
he said. “I might be a heavy punk
rocker like a lot of kids. I love show-
ing and caring for Piper.
“After a show I’m really tired, but
I have to clean her and make sure
she’s all right before I can rest.
“I’ve learned to respect cattle
more. A lot of people mistreat their
cattle by not feeding them right, or
not taking care of them,” he said.
“You have to take care of them
more like you take care of your-
self,” he added.
Very much a family project,
Haning said his parents are indis-
pensable. “I don’t know what I’d do
without my mom and dad. They
help me with the feeding and the
washing. I think my mom likes to do
it even more than me,” he said with
a laugh.
Max Haning and his wife Shirley,
agree that they are glad their son is
involved in FFA. “He’s not on
drugs, dope or anything like that,”
Haning said. “It keeps him busy.”
Mrs. Haning said the shows have
totally become a part of her life. “I
think it is so important to support
your children in whatever they do.

The first show Haning and Kitten
entered, they won first place; best
in the class. Haning said when the
judges review the heifers, they look
for depth of body, height, groom-
ing, and the cow’s femininity,
among other things.
During the school year, the heif-
ers stay in the agriculture bam at
the high school, he said. After,
when the heifers are not shown any
more, they are pastured at the
Haning farm in Collinsville, about 20
miles west of Sherman.
Max Haning, Haning’s father,
said they raise angus cattle and they
always keep the heifers in hopes
that one year they won’t have to
purchase a show heifer.
Haning’s first heifer of his own,
Lady, won between 30 and 32
shows while Haning was a freshman
and sophomore, he said. The wins
included first place, or grand
champion, and second place, or
reserve champion.
His new heifer, Piper, a Kansas
City angus, arrived in Texas in
September 1986.
Haning said it took him three
weeks to break Piper, so she would
stand quietly and let him lead her
around on a halter. It usually only
takes one week to break a heifer,
he explained, but Piper didn’t get
the hang of things until the Friday
night before their first show in
Prosper.
“I didn’t think she was ever going
to do it,” he said. The pair won
second place at the show in Prosper
and have competed in seven shows
since then, winning three grand
champions, one reserve champion
and one award for showmanship.
The pair went to the Fort Worth
Fat Livestock Show and Rodeo and
came away with seventh place. “I
thought I was going to do better,
but the top four heifers were
extremely big,” he said.
Forging ahead, the two will
compete at the Houston Livestock
Show, which is currently in
progress.
During his first year in the show
ring, Haning said he was nervous all
of the time, but now he’s very
