The bruises on Tiffany P’s face couldn’t be
covered by makeup. And the fear in her eyes
couldn’t be hidden by sunglasses. She hadn’t
done anything to deserve such a beating, but
there she sat both beaten and beaten down.
Tiffany’s mother hurt too. But it didn’t show on
her face. Tiffany’s bruises were too real to
deny—she had been too hard on her. Not from
anger but from love. And it was too hard for her
to express her guilt and sorrow over what she
had done to her daughter. So she said nothing.
Tiffany was too frightened to call the police,
and she knew her family doctor wouldn’t be-
lieve she had fallen down the stairs again. “I’m
afraid to go home, but I know I’ll get a beating
if I don’t.” Tiffany told us in her call from a
friend’s home.
The friend and her mother wanted to help, but
they didn’t want a confrontation with Tiffany’s
mother that might result in more problems for
Tiffany.
The Crisis Center Counselor agreed that Tif-
fany needed protection and directed her to the
high school counselor who had a history with
the situation. The school counselor called Tif-
fany’s mother who agreed to meet with her at
school. After talking through the problem,
Mrs. P decided to seek professional help for her
anger and her dependence on alcohol.
