BEAUMONT, Texas, May 15.—Over-
coming a two-run lead in the eighth
inning, Beaumont grabbed a thrilling
game from Fort Worth this afternoon
by a score of 7 to 8. Nixon and Robin-
son featured with the stick for the
home club. the former getting another
homer. Atz and Nance were put out
of the park for disputing a decision.
The score:
Special to The American.
TAYLOR, Texas, May 15.—Taylor
lost the second game of the series with
Temple here today in one of the best
games played on the local diamond.
It looked, until the ninth inning, as
if Taylor had the game easily won.
With Temple’s last time at bat Utz-
man filed ont to Breaux, Bradley went
out to catcher, Darnaby singled, fol-
lowed by Gordon, who made connec-
tion with one of Schmidt's fast balls
and laid it over left field fence for a
home lun. putting Temple one in the
lead, which the Producers were un-
able to overcome in their last half at
bat. Schmidt came back for the Pro-
ducers today and pitched a good game
against the Temple heavy hitters
Francis, the southpaw, worked for the
visitors striking out seven and allow-
ing the Taylor heavy artillery only
eight hits.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa., May T.—Fans and sporting men in
general all are interested in the wonderful exhibition of box-ar-
tistry shown by Jack Coombs during the Brooklyn-Philadelphia
baseball game here.
Since the Jeffries-Johnson fiasco a generation ago no rule
has stood more solid against the vicissitudes of time or the vaga-
ries of human endeavor than that promulgated then: "They can’t
come back.” Hence if Coombs is not the much-quoted exception
which proves the rule, all the “would-be-come-backs" may take
heart.
The Phillies have been going like mad ever since the season
opened. Hostile and carping critics would have it that they were
doomed to “crack,” but none, even in his wildest moments of anti-
Philadelphia argument, ever gave Moran's men anything but the
best of it when they lined up behind Eppa Rixey.
Coombs’ masterly pitching, backed up by faultless support
“in the pinches” and helped by what is known as "the breaks in
the game,” enabled Brooklyn to defeat Philadelphia and Rixey
together.
Jack Coombs, the former “iron man” and world series hero
of the Athletics, has been out of the game for several years.
Protracted illness and accidents to his "salary wing” kept him
out of Connie Mack's great team, which he had helped no little
to make world famous until the fans came to the conclusion that
“old age” would prevent the return of his former pitching ability.
That it has not done so is evident—and the dope will have to be
revised.
When Mack “cleaned out” his championship team after the
close of last season Coombs was sold to Brooklyn and his presence
