today, 8 to 2, in ten innings. Knetzer
and Bedient both pitched effectively
except in the tenth when Knetzer
weakened and three hits were se- .
cured off him, producing the run nec-

CLEVELAND, Ohio, July 19.—What
is believed to be a world’s record was
established today when the Washing-
ton team stole eight base* in the first
inning. Moeller had three thefts to
his credit. Milan two. Ainsmith two
and McBride one. This wholesale pil-
fering helped the Nationals pile up six
runs against Hagerman and Jones, the
visitors finally winning. 11 to 4.
All runs made by the locals were •
scored off Nick Altrock. who relieved
Johnson when the Nationals had
cinched the game.

The score:
lead the talent on hand. It is the
course that is responsible for many
high card. While it is not long nearly
every one is agreed that it is ope of the
most difficult to score over that can be
found in the country. The nature of
the hazards make it very easy to score
up big figures with the slightest mis-
take.
Harry Potter of St. Louis was alone
at 77. E. H. Banka rd played well up
among the first, with a card of 78.
The Edwards brothers, Donald and
Kenneth of Midlothian, showed their
kin by each turning in a card of 7 9
James Standish, who was runner up
last year to "Chick" Evans in this
same event, was also at this figure
after the first 18 holes of play. The
South was upheld by John Marshall
Jr., of Louisville, who made 78 and
by the sixteen-year-old wonder from
Atlanta. Perry Adair, who returned a
-otal of 82.
Harry Davis took an 83. He has
not yet found his game. His trouble
seems to be in his driving which is
usually the most brilliant part of his
play. Instead of the tremendous ball
that he has been driving on the Pacific
Coast for the last two years, he is
having difficulty both in distance and
direction. He seems to be a little too
big for the fairways, for they are
certainly narrow. But I have no
qualms for my team mate’s chances
when the match rounds begin. That
is his game and he is about due for a
return co true form.
Robin Y. Hayne of the Burlingame
Club, calm, had a brilliant chance to
have a first score, but spoiled his cord
on the last three holes. He had a
four, three, five to finish in which is
par for a 75 and instead took three
sixes for a total of 81.
E. S. Armstrong, the Southern Cali
fornia champion, turned in a disap-
pointing 87. His usual consistent
