Speaking before a crowd that over-
flowed the Travis County court room
Friday night, Pat M. Neff, candidate
for Governor of Texas, attacked ex-
Senator J. W Bailey’s record of
the past and "fundamentals of de-
mocracy” of the present.
He declared the former senator
is "a knocker by instinct, an egotist
by nature, a non-progressive by train-
ing. a criticiser by habit, an alien
from Texas by choice .and a repre-
sentative of the whisky interests by
employment"
Bailey, he said, has never cham-
pioned any cause for the betterment
of the people, but has, on the other
hand, opposed every great measure
that has been proposed for the bet-
terment of society.
Bailey a Negative Quantity.
. Bailey is satisfied with everything,
he said, except the national admin-
istration. the U. S. Supreme Court,
the Texas administration, the Texas
Legislature, the Texas Supreme Court,
the prohbition law. the woman suf-
frage law, the prohibition enforce-
ment act, and "a few other little
details."
Furthers Liquor Interezts.
Neff charged that bailey is em-
ployed by the liquor interests, and
that his object in coming to Texas
from "his beautiful residence on the
banks of the Potomac" is a part
of the brewers’ plot to overthrow the
prohibition law's enforcement.
Congress, he said, has the right
of determining the percentage ot al-
cohol that is intoxicating, and the
Bailey faction'* object in controlling
the delegation to the National Con-
vention is a part of the national plan
to elect a Congress that will make
the percentage high.
Bailey Getting Sick.
"Bailey says that all the great
statesmen are dead except him, and
that he is not feeling well.” Neff
said.
"He is feeling better now than he
will after the May convention, and I
predict that he will be feeling worse
on Saturday night, July 24."
"When you hear him speak," he
■aid, “you will think he never read
anything in the Bible except the
Book of Lamentations; anything in
literature except* 'Looking Back-
ward.' and anything of poetry ex-
cept Turn Backward. Turn Back-
ward.' ”
Attacks War Record.
Neff attacked the war record of
the former Senator, declaring that
while Texan* were domg their utmost
to shoulder the responsibilities of the
war. Bailey was in Washington criti-
cising the conduct of the war, and
"never lifted his voice for the sale
of a single Liberty bond."
"He, picked up his gauge of battle
exactly where the Kaiser put it
down,” th? speaker charged.
Bailey, he said, in his attacks on
the government admits that the gov-
ernment had detective® on his trail
during the war.
”I would be ashamed to admit
। that I was so suspicious a character
that my own government would send
its detectives on niv trail.” Neff
■aid.
