NEW YORK (JTA) —Justice
Meier Steinbrink this week op-
posed a report of the Joint
Placement Commission of the
Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis and the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions on a standardized proce-
dure for placing rabbis. Speak-
ing at the annual meeting of
the Assembly of delegates of
the New York Federation of the
U. A. H. C., Justice Steinbrink
said that the plan would im-
pinge on the autonomy and in-
dependence of the congrega-
tion.
Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn, —
chairman of the Joint Place-
ment Commission, who present-
ed the plan to the conference,
called it “a representative and
democratic body made up in
equal part of rabbinical and lay
leadership, intended to bring
order into a situation which
lacks both.”
Frederick F. Greenman, pre-
sident of the Federation, told
the 100 representatives of the
54 Reform temples affiliated
with the body, that he expect-
ed in the “not too distant fu-
ture” to see 100 Reform con-
gregations in New York. He

overseas during the past two de-
cades, Mr. Cantor said that his
trip to Israel marked a turning
point in his career.
“I must go and see what is
happening in Israel because that
smallest democracy is doing the
biggest humanitarian job in the
world. I mean saving and giving
a home to hundreds of thousands
of men, women and childreen
who have been waiting for a
home for more than ten years,”
he declared.
“I am going to Israel because
I have decided to devote most
of my working and leisure time
to the United Jewish Appeal,"
Mr. Cantor said. ■
Mr. and Mrs. Cantor will be
in Israel for approximately three
weeks. They are expected to re-
turn to the United States on or
about July 15th.
In addition to serving as Na-
tional Campaign Chairman of the
United Jewish Appeal, Mr. Can-
tor has also served as Chairman
of its National Campaign Council
and has been active on the boards
of its constituent agencies.
For his outstanding leadership
in behalf of his fellow-Jews
throughout the world, he won
the Humanitarian Award of the
United Jewish Appeal in 1947
and again in 1948.
Among Mr. Cantor’s other ma-
jor philanthropic efforts have
been the “March of Dimes” and
“Give A Gift to A Yank,” both
of which he founded.
Eddie Cantor, a National Cam-
paign Chairman of the United
Jewish Appeal, sailed this week
to make his first visit to Israel
“to see how the little guy among
the democracies of the world is
getting along.”
Mr. Cantor, who is making the
trip at the personal invitation of
Prime Minister David Ben
Gurion, said that he was going
to Israel as “an American who
wants to see what the United
States accomplished in helping set
up one of the smallest democra-
cies in the world.” He was ac-
companied by Mrs. Cantor.
His departure climaxed a
whirlwind tour in which Mr.
Cantor visited more than 20 key
cities throughout the country in
behalf of the United Jewish Ap-
peal, the nationwide campaign
which is now engaged in raising
large sums for the program of
immigration and settlement in
Israel as well as for the rehabili-
tation and relief of large num-
bers ih Europe and North Af-
rica and for the adjustment of
newcomers in the United States.
Having occupied a place of
leadership in American aid to the
victims of war and persecution

gues, particularly in new hous-
ing developments.
