bitterness in our community.
Let me remind them in the words of our sages, “Lo Hamid-

action). Not words, certainly not bitter and violent words, but
make every attempt to further their interest in the people and
the government elected by the citizens of Israel. Those of you
who are in doubt as to who the government of Israel is should
ascertain who is the recognized government of Israel, and what
is its authority. You who doubt should know what the Jewish

What difference does it make ultimately what organizatiq
did it, or whom in Israel will get the food? What does it matter
whether the announcement read this way or that way, or what
mistake was made in the publicity? What is of consequence is
that a group of Jews who have seen the hunger and the need
of their fellow Jews in Israel have set out to help them without
any desire for personal gain or glory. *
Yet, they are bitterly attacked and condemned and their
sincere efforts are being made the subject of bitter editorials
that lead only to hate and strife, to discord and contention that
bring happiness only to the enemies of Israel and of Jewish
people everywhere.
Would that those who are giving so much of their time
and effort to these violent and painful attacks on sincere and
self sacrificing leaders and servants of our Jewish community,
were to put all that energy to use to raise more funds and send
more food to feed the hungry and encourage them to greater
efforts towards the building of Israel.
To demonstrate my sincerity, I am giving an additional

Dear Mr. Suhl: The letter to which you signed your name
merits an answer in that it shows a lack of understanding of
the over-all question involved in the Food for. Israel drive which
the Jewish Agency has stated is “unnecessary and undesirable”.
The frequency ofa biblical and talmudic quotations in the few
letters we have received from men with your point of view makes
me think of a quotation which is not biblical and which may 30
not be exact: “Even the devil can quote scriptures for a purpose”.
But I do want to quote one. little bit—it appears on page
396 of a book titled “An Anthology of Jewish Humor and
Maxims” and reads: “There are people who think they have
kind hearts, when in reality they only have weak nerves.”
Let me elucidate: you quote from Isaiah and I agree with
■your quotation. But can you tell me that Isaiah meant that if
all the children of Israel were hungry, you should set yourself
up as God and decide that oly those children should be fed
who belong to the Zionist sympathizers?
You abhor and despise politics and legalistic controversies—
why should there be controversies, and why should politics be
so terrible when all of life-and national existence is a political
battle. Let us take your motto “the healing of my people” and
let us divorce this aspect from politics. Give to the United Jew-
ish. Appeal through our annual United Jewish Campaign, now
in progress, and you give to all the children of Israel and to all
the welfare of this new republic—sans the politics you abhor.
Why did I rush into print, you ask. I didn’t rush into print.
I had the release from the Jewish Agency the week before the
“Food for Israel” Drive and called one of the Zionist leaders.
He thought it would not be proper for me to put it alongside of'
the news of the food drive. I have neither accused nor condemned
as you state, I merely took the. words of the Jewish Agency
which represents the government of Israel in this instance. Why
did I not consult the Houston Zionist. District? Since when do
I have to consult with any organization about news. Must I
conform to the Zionist point of view in order to be able to ex-
press myself. Or any point of view, for that matter, excepting
my own? If there should have been any consultation it should
have been on the part of the Houston Zionist District with the
Arabia Temple’s new clinic

month to admit crippled tots.
The new clinic building is a

ing of contemporary architec-
ture and a $1,300,000 insti- .
tution.
The work has been support-
ed, not only by the Shrine, but
by generous Houstonians of all
faiths and from all walks of
life. Financial support haXn
drawn from the entire com-
munity and the benefits of the

Israel drive, and I invite those to follow me who have done You say it does not matter what mistakes were made in
- the announcements or advertisements. I care, because truth is
one objective of the Torah and the prophets. In business life
we have better business bureaus and the government and the
courts; in Jewish life we should have public opinion to guaran-
tee the truth of our statements. There are many fine citizens of
our community who have agreed with the point of view express-
ed in our editorial stand. The executive committee of the Jewish
Community Council supported the release of the letter from the

I am writing this letter to you not as an official of any
organization or as a professional leader, but rather as “Achad
Ha Am”, one who loves his people and whose supreme wish it
is in the words of Isaiah, to deal his bread to the hungry, which,
I understand, is one of the bask and fundamental objectives
' of all religions.
I abhor and despise politics and legalistic controversies,
that do no good but wreak a great deal of injury and damage
to the unity and the harmony of our community. I seek, like
many other Jews in our community, only “the healing of my
people".
That is why I deplore, dear Editor, your rushing into print
with accusations that lead only to strife and contention, bring
bitterness and hatred, and destroy the tendencies to cooperation
and unity in our Jewish communal life.
Furthermore, I feel that you have added insult to injury
by rushing into print before even consulting the organization
that you have accused and edndemned, or even inquiring from
it what their purposes and objectives were. One of the basic
requirements of our American way of life is that the accused
be given a hearing. Apparently you haven’t thought that neces-
sary or proper.
The Food for Israel drive raised some six or seven thousand
dollars for which food was bought and-sent to Israel. That is
the only thing that concerns me. Rice was purchased here at
wholesale prices, from one of the outstanding Jewish leaders of
our community, and sent to feed the hungry. So far as I am

tempting to raise $200,000 to
finane the .work for 1952.

been maintained for more than
years. During this time
thousands of children in Hous-
ton and South Texas have been
treated.
