Galatians 4:4, 5
But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to
redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
In the first Book of the Bible, Genesis, we are told of God's plan of love to
redeem mankind. To follow the pattern of the Messianic prophecies in the Old
Testament, and to see their fulfillment in the New, is to have a rich experience in
faith. That He was the promised seed of Abraham, of the lineage of David born of
a virgin in the city of Bethlehem, these have all been fulfilled. That kings should
come to His rising, that His name should be Immanuel, God with us, that there
should be the massacre of the infants, that His family should have to flee into
Egypt, these are all a part of the Christmas story.
Were we to follow His life into its maturity we should find the same amazing
pattern. His rejection by the Jews, some of His characteristics, His triumphal en-
try, His being betrayed by a friend and sold for thirty pieces of silver, as well as His
crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, these all indicate a master plan and fulfill-
ment by God for us.
This He did to set us free from sin. No wonder that poets and hymn writers
through the ages have found their language beggared when trying to describe their
gratitude. There come to mind the lines from a Lenten hymn:
What language shall I borrow

The Christmas song and meditation on
this page is taken from Mrs. Nelson's
book, "God's Song In My Heart." It is a
devotional book with 53 favorite hymns
and a devotional related to each one.

There is a language! He himself told
us about it. He made it very clear that,
if we want to do something for Him, we
should seek the hungry and the lonely
and the naked and the stranger and the
prisoner. He promised us that in serving
them and helping them, we would be
doing it for Him. In fact, He assures us
that is how men will know that we love
Him.
Christmas, His birthday, is a wonder-
ful time. What do our preparations
evidence about your gratitude and your
love for Him? I am reminded of one of
our boys when he was small. We had
tried to teach them that the joy of
Christmas was in doing for others.
There was none of this: "What do you
want Santa to bring?" I weakened
though, and took them to the train
department of a toy shop. They loved
watching those trains. That night this
boy prayed, "And please; God, if I get
two trains for Christmas, help me give
one to the poor."
PRAYER: Search our hearts, O
Lord, and make us honest about our
plans. Give us the courage and the grace
to put You at the heart ofall of them. In
Jesus' name. Amen.
