SIGNIFICANCE OF PURIM
The message of Purim, to one
who opens his heart and mind
to it, never fails to bring joy
and courage. These virtues for
any individual add great mean
ing and purpose to life. They
enable us to confront whatever
comes with the right attitude
so that with courage and joy, or
let us say the courage to be
joyful about life regardless of
circumstance, we are able to
celebrate the fundamental fact
that we are alive and have
something to do for the redemp-
tion of ourselves and of man-
kind.
It is regrettable that we have
permitted the Festival of Purim
to become only a children’s ob-
servance so that as adults we
are no longer involved either in
the reading of the book of
Esther, which provides us with
a voice in the

the historical background of the

dren but for adults.
The story of Purim describes
a type of hatred which is all too
common in the world. Unrea-
sonable as it is emotional, it
is dislike of the unlike. We
don’t care to admit it but there
is a little bit of Haman in the
best of us. There is too much
deep rooted antagonism and too
much bigotry for the safety of
democracy unless we guard
against it. Indeed, I would go
so far as to say that there is
no one who is not profoundly-
prejudiced about something or
about some person. The story
of Purim illuminates for us the
role we must play in life as
loyal Mordecais and Esthers,
and the opposition we must pro-
vide against the evil of intoler-
ance.

Let us then make Purim an
adult celebration as well as a
children's frolic. Purim deals
w ith a subject so deep and so
significant that we are depri-
ving ourselves of a great
amount of insight when we
neglect the Purim observance.
Let us not be content just eat-
ing a Hamentasch or going to
a dance for the occasion. What
we need is to study Purim so
that we can derive the joy of
serving the Lord through creat
ing brotherhood everywhere.
Purim inspires us with courage
to struggle for the fulfillment
of God's kingdom upon earth.
