AMERICA'S LARGEST
The year now drawing to its
end has been, for the Jewish peo-
ple in Israel and throughout the
world, a year fraught with destiny.
The State of Israel, heart of Jew-
ry, faced danger of extinction, the
like of which had never been.
Arab States to north, east and
south rose up to an attack upon
Israel, to wipe it out.
We did everything to avert this
war, and to remove the threat to
our existence by peaceful means.
But, when it was clear that the
enemy was tightening the noose of
strangulation around us and open-
ing the assault, Israel’s Defense
Forces went forth to protect the
State. In a superbly heroic and
glorious campaign, unprecedent-
— ed in the annals of our nation, our
Army routed the enemy and re-
deemed Israel from the peril of
annihilation.
In this contest, Israel fought
alone. We had but one ally: the
Jewish people. When all the citi-
zens of Israel were mobilized to
defend their Land, the Jewish
people in all the countries of the
world came valiantly forward,
with all its might and main, to
help Israel. There were Jewish
communities which extended
great political and material aid.
Thousands of young men and
women hurried to work in Israel
to fill the places of the soldiers
who had gone to fight. And there
are large Jewish communities
which longed with all their hearts
to help us but were prevented,
and even forbidden to express
their immense pride. We know
that they are with us in thought
and prayer, as we are with them.
The war is over, but many a
hard battle still awaits us. Our
adversaries still refuse to reconcile
themselves to the idea that they
will never succeed in uprooting
Israel. They are still trying, in
many ways, to assail our being,
and, relying on powerful allies,
are preparing themselves for fur-
ther onslaughts. This evil design
of theirs, too, will be undone.
In the coming struggle, we
will continue to need the succour
of our one ally—the Jewish peo-
ple. Together we must transform
the victory of the Israel Defense
Forces into the basis of permanent
peace between Israel and its neigh-
bors. Together, we must develop
and strengthen Israel. Together,
we must build in Israel a great
center of Jewish creativity and of
Jewish life.
In the year gone by, our peo-
ple was bidden to safeguard Is-
rael. In the days ahead, it will be
incumbent upon us to keep build-
ing the Israel of the future. To
that end, we shall require the dedi-
cation, the faith, the skills, the
scholarship and the resources of
the Jewish people. Above all, we
need more and more Jews who
will come and abide with us here.
From a re-unified Jerusalem,
eternal capital of Israel, from be-
side the Western Wall, remnant
of our Temple, the blessing of Is-
rael, of its people and its Govern-
ment, goes out to you. May this
year,' the twentieth of Israel re-
born, be a splendid year for the
Jewish people—a year of freedom
for all our nation, a year of cul-
tural flowering, a year of great
uplift and of a great aliyah.
Shana Tova!
