Commission For Jewish
Education Announces
Teacher's Training Program
The annual Teacher’s Train-
ing Institute will be sponsored
by the Houston Commission for
Jewish Education and is sched-
uled to begin on Thursday, No-
vember 2nd, 1967. A Bible and
commentary will be conducted
by Rabbi Jerome Sherman of
Cong. Beth Israel.
Hie Institute will be held
every Thursday evening for 10
weeks from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
at Cong. Emanu El. The course
is open to all religious school
teacher and prospective teach-
ers of the Jewish community.

After much campaigning
and a highly-spirited election,
the following Day School pu-
pils were elected to office: Joey
Rice — editor of “The Beth
Yeshurun Times”; Dana Barg,

and Ilene Melnick—Patrolmen.
The student officials will take
office next week.

Hayeled will be consecrated. A

Torah will be part of the ser-
vice. Following the ceremony
a luncheon honoring the con-

the Day School P.T.A.

will join in a quiet observance
here of the fiftieth anniversary
of the establishment of the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency,
the only worldwide news ser-
vices devoted exclusively to
coverage of developments af-
fecting the Jewish people
around the world. The occasion
will be luncheon at the Ameri-
cana Hotel, New York, on No-
vember 2.
Spokesmen for the communi-
ty will assess the role of JTA
over the past half-century as
the prime reporter of news con-
cerning the Jewish people and
will appraise its role today as
an interpreter of Jewish life,
reporter of events affecting the
Jewish community and as a
bond linking the American, Is-
raeli and other Jewish commu-
nities in all parts of the world.
Robert H. Arnow, President
of the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency, will preside and will
describe plans for development
of the service as it enters its
second half-century. There will
be no fund-raising. Reserva-
tions for the luncheon can be
made at the JTA office in New
York.
Mr. Arnow announced this
week the election of Hermann
Merkin and Rabbi Edward T.
Sandrow to the board of di-
rectors of the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency. Mr. Merkin
is president of Merkin & Co.,
members of the New York and
American Stock Exchanges. He
is president of the Fifth Avenue
Synagogue and a member of
the board of the Union of Or-
thodox Jewish Congregations.
Rabbi Sandrow is rabbi of
Temple Beth El, Cedarhurst,
L.I., and is president of the
New York Board of Rabbis.
