When they were
on the warpath,
their horses'
tails were tied
up to keep their
lances from get-
ting caught up in
them.
The Indians had
wars with other
neighboring
tribes long before
they had battles
with the white
men.
Steffen told
why the Indians
fought so fiercely
It was because
the white men tool
away their lands
and homes.
The Indian war-
riors wore only
a two-piece leathe
loin clcth.This
breech cloth was
the authentic garb
of the Comache
until 1910. At-
tached to this
breech cloth were
leather leggings.
Most people
thought that the
Indian rode bare-
back,but they had
saddles construc-
ted of antlers &
pieces of leather
stuffed with straw
The children
asked Randy to
draw a horse and
colt, a long-
horn steer, and
at the last he
drew the picture
Randy Steffen,
the city's most fa-
mous artist,capti-
vated his young,
as well as older
members,of his
audience at Central
PTA Tuesday night.
He told of the
horses which the
Spaniards brought
to the new world.
He told of the
ranches on which
they were bred.
His stories of
hew the Indians
stole the horses'
and learned to ride
them,even though
it was hot legal,
intrigues the
youngsters.
Steffen told of
the different ways
the Indians deco-
rated the horses:
a streak of light=
ning represented
speed for the
horse; a handprint
in red meant that
they had ridden
over an enemy in
battle with that
