Bellville General Hospital’s
board chairman. Miles Wilson,
chief of staff, Dr. Winston B.
Neely, and administrator,
Herbert A. Cope, all received
notice that the Joint Commis-
sion of Accreditation of
Hospitals had awarded a
two-year accreditation to the
Bellville General Hospital. The
notice stated that the Joint
Commission considers accredit-
ation an ongoing educational
activity to be carried on
throughout the two-year period
for which the hospital is
accredited.
The story of the voluntary
accreditation of health care
facilities is really the story of
the Joint Commission on
Accreditation of Hospitals
(JCAH). Formed in 1951, the
Joint Commission is a
not-for-profit, non-govermental
organization sponsored by four
major hospital and medical
organizations-the American
College of Physicians, the
American College of Surgeions,
the American Hospital Associa-
tion, and the American
Medical Association.
The purpose of the Joint
Commission is to establish
standards for the operation of
hospitals and other health-re-
lated facilities and services and
to conduct accreditation pro-
grams which will encourage the
voluntary attainment of high
standards of care and services
rendered in such facilities.
The unique feature of all of
the joint Commission’s accred-
itation programs is that they
are voluntary. not compulsory.
There is no law that requires
any type of health care facility
to become accredited. It is a
