counts were held and attracted Shirley Miller, Maxine Fry,
more than a hundred thousand Jacqueline Williams and baby
birders, who combed moun- boy.

and girls to write
concentrate their efforts on the
refuge but will extend coverage
to include all lakes, marshes
and woods within a 15-mile
circle. The central point is
located two miles northwest of
Eagle Lake.
Anyone interested in learn-
ing more about birds in this
area is encouraged to contact
Refuge Manager Wayne Shiff-
lett who will provide you with
all the details on this year’s
Christmas Bird Count. Last
year the refuge led the nation’s
counts in total number of
LeConte’s sparrows with 47.

crops committee.
During the meeting four
Extension specialist from Texas
A&M will discuss the recom-
mended production and mar-
keting practices for the 1977
crop season. Subjects to be
covered will include general
recommendations, weed con-
trol, insect control, market
price out-look information and
a cotton budget for Austin
County to include costs and
returns of cotton production in
the county.
“Information that will be
presented during the afternoon
will be helpful to producers as
they make plans for their crop
in 1977 and we hope they will
attend,” concluded Murphey.

travel 4.9 miles from the
courthouse on Hwy. 159 toward

Those who attend are asked
to wear shoes or boots that have
not been worn in hog pens, lots,
farrowing houses, etc. to lessen
the possibility of spreading
diseases, concluded Murphey.

counts. The 1975 count at
Freeport, Texas, attracted
more than 100 birders, who
counted 215 different species,
leading the nation. This count
has led the nation or been one
of the top counts ever since it
was initiated a few years ago. A
count at Catemaco, Mexico, led
the world with 293 different
species.
Last year the count at the
Attwater Prairie Chicken
Refuge attracted 10 observers
who counted 77 different
species. It is anticipated that
this year’s count will be much
higher as the birders will not
