the thyroid gland can be hyper on a particular day and normal
the next, diagnosing with the T3 and T4 tests is difficult with
borderline cases. Luckily it took but a few days to be tested
by Dr. Gurova (whom I enthusiastically recommend) and re-
ferred to an endocrinologist. There the wait began.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located in the front of
the neck just below the Adam’s apple—it works like a chemi-
cal factory that uses iodine to produce hormones which regu-
late your metabolism.
Hyperthyroidism is the term given to an overactive thyroid.
That’s when the thyroid makes more hormones than the body
needs—too much thyroid hormone can cause an abnormally
fast heart rate, shortness of breath, increased appetite yet loss
of weight, muscle weakness especially in the shoulders and
thighs, joint pain, insomnia, hand tremors, nervousness, dif-

By the time the 67 model year was nearing, G.M. had al-
ready logged several years of performance automobiles,
both on the track and on the street. Then Pontiac snuck
one under the radar and the contemparary muscle car
era changed forvever. In 1964, the first GTO brought
instant ethusiasts and sales were off the chart. Each year
the GTO market grew. By 1966 production had grown
to 96,946 across three body styles, the hardtop, two-door
post, and the convertible. Since 68 promised a total re-
vamp, 1967 was limited to minor changes. The grill
was still split, but changed to a 45% mesh pattern. The
taillamps were changed to divided lenses above a new
bumper that featured rectangular reverse lamps rather
than round bezels. Interiors included bench or bucket
seats with simulated walnut grain dressing up the center
console. Yes! Bench seats were available in the GTO,
Wow! Strange Huh! The woodgrain also surrounded
the instrument cluster and radio. Upgrades included a
custom sport steering wheel, power windows, air con-
ditioning and even cruise control. These GTO’s came
with a heavy-duty box frame and independent front
suspension, with coil springs for a big car ride and safe
handling when the goat became aggressive. Well, Troy
and I beat lots of these big monsters with our 64 % Mus-
tang 260-V8 3 speed. Yeh! Sounds weird, but just ask
Dick Turner. But the 67 GTO had brute strength with
the 400 cubic inch V8 available with H.O. (High output)
that replaced the Tri-power of 1966. 13,827 lucky buy-
ers received the H.O. 400 V8, while the Ram-Air 400
was limited to 750. The increased cost of $263.30 was
the culprit. Really? Well that was a lot of money in 67!
Oddly enough the Convertible model only had 1,591
400 H.O.’s and 56 Ram Air setups. So...The big money
in one of the rare Convertbles. So if you were economy
minded you could get a 400 V8 with two barrel carbs.
2,967 cheapskates bought that one. Here is a surprise,
you could get a three speed column shift or floor shift as
standard equipment or opt for the close or wide range
4-speed or even that boring Turbo hydramatic. Grease
anyone?
