era take advantage of their nearness to
the local income tax collector’s office
by filing their returns early and there-
by assure themselves of prompt
attention. Such a step would be of
! considerable help to the collector S
office, he said, in that it would enable
the deputies to get as many reports
out of the way before the rush of the
last week before the expiration of the
time for payment, when thousands of
returns will arrive from every portion
of the State through the mails.
Clerk Frank Dewey asking him not to
proceed with plans to present Mr.
Hughes’ name in the State primary as
a candidate for the Republican nomi-
nation for the presidency.
"I cordiallv appreciate your personal
interest and friendly setiment you ex-
press." Mr. Hughes’ letter reads. “I
am utterly unwilling, however, to un-
dertake a scrond candidacy. I am
deeply interesteed in Republican suc-
cess and anxious that there should be
Republiacn unity, but there is no lack
of available men and I do not recog-
nize any obligation to permit my name
to be used. I must, therefore, ask you
not to bring my name forward.’ "
