, / . OPEN DAILY 8:30 - 5:30
The fourth of the ten com-
mandments leads, “Remember
the sabbath day, to keep it
holy. Six days you shall la-
bor, and do all your work; but
the seventh day is a sabbath
to the Lord your God; in it
yoU'shall not do any work."
Exodus 20:8,9a) The obser-
vance of the seventh day as
a, “sabbath” or “rest” day
was based on God’s cessa-
tion of labor after the six days
of creation. (verse 11; Gen-
esis 2:1-3) This sabbath,
which was earlier observed
in the gathering of manna
(Ex. 16:22-30), was made one
of the ten key commandments
of God’s old covenant with
Israel in the law of Moses.
As a devout Jew who lived
under the law of Moses, Jesus
kept the sabbath and worship-
ed regularly on the sabbath
at His local home town syna-
gogue. (Luke 4:16f) Jesus’
opponents frequently accus-
ed Him of breakjng the sab-
bath, but in reality, He was
simply defending its humani-
tarian intent and rejecting the
legalistic sabbath traditions
of the Pharisees. (Read Matt.
12:9-14; Mark 2:23-28; Luke
13:10-17.)
Jesus taught that the sab-
bath should be observed in a
positive way rather than in a
negative way. “It is lawful
to do good on the sabbath.”
(Matt. 12:12) Jesus stressed
that the sabbath was estab-
lished for the good of man,
and not to put repressive,
legalistic restrictions on
people. “The sabbath was
made for man, not man for the
sabbath.” (Mark 2:27) And
Jesus, as the incarnate Son
of God, claimed total author- ;
ity ovex sabbath law. “The
Son of man is lord even of the
sabbath." (Made 2:28)
Since the fourth of the ten
commandments was a ceremo-
nial law of the old covenant,,
next week we will see what
happened to the sabbath after
.Jesus established His new
covenant.-L.K.
