Do you notice that

Recent legislation granting
• 6.6 per cent increase in Veter-
ans Administration compensation-
benefits to disabled veterans al-
so included a boost in the VA
clothing allowance for the
nearly 58,000 disabled veterans
whose prosthetic or orthopedic
devices cause undue wear and
tear on clothing, Jack Coker,
Director of t h e Waco VA
Regional Office, said today.
The increase, however, ap-
plies to the 1978 allowance.
The 1977 payments had al-
ready been made before the in-
crease went into effect last
month, Coker explained. Cloth-
ing allowance checks are nor-
mally mailed by September 1
each year.
The payments go to veterans
whose service-connected disabili-
ties require the use of special
prosthetic or orthopedic devices,
including artificial limbs, braces
and wheelchairs which VA deter-
mines cause damage t o their
clothing.
Veterans on VA compensa-
tion rolls receive the allowance
automatically after initial appli-
cation.
Military retirees not receiving
VA compensation must apply for
the allowance each year. They
are not required to waive any
portion of their retirement pay to
receive the allowance, however.
