Navy Radioman Seaman
Marney W. DeFoore, son of Mr.
and Mrs. John N. DeFoore Sr.
of Route 1, Box 245B, Comfort,
Texas, is serving as a crew-
member aboard the Navy’s
newest destroyer.
USS John Young was commis-
sioned May 20 in Pascagoula,
Miss. Vice Admiral Samuel L.
Gravely Jr., USN, commander
of the U.S. Third Fleet, was
principal speaker for the cere-
mony.
More than 250 officers and
enlisted men are assigned to
John Young. Primarily de-
signed for antisubmarine war-
fare (ASW), the ship is armed
with two lightweight five-inch
guns, ASW torpedo tubes and
an ASW rocket launcher. John
Young also is capable of carry-
ing a light helicopter for long
range detection and attack of
submarines.
The 11th ship in her class,
DD-973 is named for Continen-
tal Navy Captain John Young
who gave his life during the
American Revolution.
The Navy’s newest destroyer
is 563 feet long, displaces 7,800
tons and can travel at speeds in
excess of 30 knots. She will be
homeported in San Diego.
A 1975 graduate of Cooper
High School, Defoore joined the
Navy in January 1976.
