Hard Arkansas (tine) is the best
stone for final polishing of an already sharp blade.
This stone is not used for fast sharpening of your
knife, but instead, for touching up and finishing a
sharp edge.
Hard Arkansas stone is sought after the world over,
by people desiring the sharpest blade possible.
Also, this stone is used by intricate tool and die
makers, gunsmiths, dentists, doctors, watchmakers,
and serious sportsmen, all who have to have the
finest edge on all their tools.
Sharpening with this stone takes a little longer, but
the truly polished, razor edge is well worth it.
Black Hard Arkansas (extra
fine) is the supreme ultimate in a finishing whet-
stone. Black Hard Arkansas is used only on blades
which are already extremely sharp. This stone is
the final step in sharpening high quality cutlery or
straight razors.
Sharpening on a Black Hard Arkansas stone takes
quite a bit of time, as it removes only a very minute
amount of metal from your blade. This stone is only
for final touch up of your blade.
If you are a perfectionist with knives and sharp
edges, then Black Hard Arkansas must be included
in your set of Natural Arkansas oilstones.

Natural Arkansas Whetstones are used world
wide to sharpen all kinds of knives, tools, and cut-
ting edges. Smith's Arkansas stones tend to pro-
long the life of your blade, because they don't
remove a great amount of metal from your
blade, as they sharpen the edge. There are
many manufactured stones on the market which
will sharpen your knife. But, Natural Arkansas
Whetstones are the only stone in the world that
will polish the edge as it sharpens. With care, a
Smith's oilstone will last a lifetime. Our stones, with
normal use will never "hollow out" or "wear
down." Usually, after you purchase a Smith stone,
you'll never have to buy another Natural stone.
All Natural Arkansas oilstones are quarried from
limited and delicate deposits of the mineral
Novaculite, which is found only near Hot Springs,
Arkansas. Each stone is cut by hand with dia-
mond saws, finished, graded, and packaged by
Hiram A. Smith Whetstone, Inc. Being a natural
product, color, visible marking, or slight imper-
fections in the stone have no bearing upon the
quality or use of the stone.
Always use plenty of lubricant on your Smith's
Arkansas oilstone. We suggest Smith's Honing Oil,
which has been proven to be one of the best
honing oils available anywhere.
Washita (coarse) is the most rapid cut-
ting stone of the four grades and will produce the
fastest edge on your knife.
Washita stones are used to start edges on all
types of knives, large or small. Also, these stones
are used extensively by wood-carvers, sportsmen,
butchers, commercial knife sharpeners, and others
who desire a keen, polished edge on their knives
and tools in a minimum of time.
Even though this Washita oilstone is the coarsest
of the four grades, it will still sharpen your knife until
it will shave the hair from your arm.
Soft Arkansas (medium) stones
are excellent to use to keep a fine, sharp edge on
all hunting, fishing, kitchen, and pocket knives.
They are used by anyone desiring a very sharp,
polished edge on their knives and tools.
Soft Arkansas is the best general purpose
stone of the four grades, and will quickly pro-
duce a very sharp edge on your knives.
