School buildings and teaching facilities have come a long way since the advent of public educa-
tion in Boerne.
Herman William Toepperwein appears to have been our first public school teacher, although
there obviously was a private education system prior to his time. Mr. Toepperwein immigrated to
Texas from Burg, Germany in 1851 at the age of 14. He married Amalie Luckenbach May 27,1857
in Boerne and that same year began his teaching career at $25.00 per month.
The first school was thought to have been a log house and it was said to be located at the site
of the old Henry Schrader residence, but this has not been confirmed. Nine families and nineteen
students were represented in the first class. The students were: Henry and Albert Baumann; An-
ton, Amalie and Edward Bergman; Ferdinand and Charlotte Hagemann; Ernst, Moritz and Anna
Pfeifer; Franz Shaefer; Frederike, Minna and Gotlieb Stephan; August and Minna Theis; Joseph
and Caroline Vogt, and Elise Wendler.
In the 1870's a two-room limestone block school building was constructed and still stands im-
mediately behind the Utility Building. Finally the much larger two-story schoolhouse was con-
structed in 1911. It, of course, is now the city Utility Building. The Johns Road complex was
started in 1929, and the new High School on Blanco was built in 1971.
Before the 1911 building was occupied, the first four grades used a frame building on Blanco
Road in front of the 1870's school. Later it was moved to the corner of Hosack and O'Grady where
it became the Boerne Negro School.
Few communities the size of Boerne have building structures that represent the different levels
of public education available in their time over a span of more that 100 years.
