Among th~e special-purpose districts, 133 hospital districts
levied $715 million in property taxes as shown in Table 8, and 49
junior colleges aided another $279 million. Tax levies for
districts providing water totaled $316 million; $149 million for
districts providing navigation, port, or drainage services;
special districts to service road bonds levied $11.3 million; and
130 fire control districts imposed $16.6 million of property
taxes.
Dallas and Harris counties levy a countywide tax for school
services; five counties levy a countywide tax that is distributed
among school districts within the county; Duval County levies a
tax for vocational education services; and South Texas ISD levies
a tax in Cameron, Hidalgo, and part of Willacy counties to
supplement the educational services of local school districts in
those counties. A total of $17.8 million in taxes was imposed
for these school equalization services. These equalization
levies were continued despite the creation of County Education
Districts in these locations.
