Since the 19th of October last, tive
men have been hung, and two made their
escape while in the act of being hung ;
another was taken out and shot to death.
Therepoi: of condition of affa’s in
Erath and Comanche counties, embodied
in the report of the Adjutant General of
the State of Texas, 1872, gives r" par-
ticv’ars with regard to the above.
General Britton went in person to in-
vestigate the matier, anil alrested a
number ef citizens of both counties,
charged with being implicated in the
hanging of these men. The investiga-
lion was had before Esquire Gravis, of
Comanche, anti so conclusive was the
testimony that foe" were committed
without bai, and four gave bail for their
appearance before the Disict Covriamm

haut has held its session at Comanche,
and adjourned. ‘Th grand jury returned
only three indictments, and they were
for small offenets. Notwithstanding the
most positive evidence was submitted,

A young man named James Thompson,
shot ami kiled a policeman by the name
of Allen Lew is Hanger, I etter known as
"Curley." Thompson is respectably
connected, but of a reckless character. ’

■ C. V. Schafer, ex-mayor of Bas. op,
died on the 17th inst. He was born in
Germany in 1815; emigrated to America
in 1838, and located in Basirop in 1847.
A efticvliy occurred at McDade be-
tween two young men ; one was stabbed
n the throat; word not dangerons.
A shooting afray took place near Elgin,
in w!ch a young man named Wi"‛am
Cottinghain was mnorta‛‛y wounded. He
died on the 17th inst.
A man, named Wm. Ke"er, attempted
to leave the train at McDade, while the
cars were in motion; he fe” and received
perious injuries. He had just come to
this State from Georgia.

The Navasota Tablet is b leading
organ of the “g.eat vnwashed”" in Cec-
iral Texas, and may safely be presumed
to Apeak er catMra, when laying down
pai - precepts. Its comments on the
Legislature for accepting the bospita?i-
i.cs of Galveston, cannot lie construed as
comprnentary to the Democratic mem-
bers of that body. However fierce it
may be in its denuuciations of what it
terms Radical "extravagance," it is by
no means mi‛d in its rebuke of Demo-
.cratic gaiety. Afer alludiug to what
might have teen expected of a Radical
Legislature, it says:
“ But for men who have professed holy
ho. or at Ral‛ca‛ recklessness—men who ran
on the holy-ho: or ticket fortheir seats—to
caP the pot black when they have shown
themselves kettles, to reprove the Dev:

Tablet, in condemniug the Legislature

The search for the bodies of the un-
fortunate men who perished in the Hames
of the i"-fated steamer Henry A. Jones,
continues with’ success. One bodv has
been found near Red Fish Bar. Three
bodies in a‛l have been recovered.
The German Liberal Republicans will
meet on the 27th to nominate a candi-
date for the legislature, to sill vacancy
caused by the death of A. IL Rossy.

scrap of Confederate history, in its raids

saintly man, is an adroit Hauk move-
ment on the treasury, of which Honey is
the wandering and unhappy ghost. Of
Honey's innocence the Statesman has
long ago uttered its unbelief: of

the State, the Statesman is we" con-
\ '.need, but it svits the “Ring” to believe
the devil a saint, and the Statesman has
no choice but to’echo the opinion of the
“King Master," who is one of Honey's

Five Hundred Dollars for the arrest and delivery
of said murderer or murderers to the sheriff of
