Rock Island Spending Six
Millions on Tracks
Rock Island Railroad is making
ready for the anticipated heavy
' movement of traffic during 1928
, by nebullding over 500 miles of
track, it was learned Tuesday thru
the general freight agent's office.
Rail used on the main lines will
be 110 pound, supported by rock
ballast of the highest, type. An
expenditure of nearly 16,000,000
will be made.
Rall weighing 90 pounds to the
yard was considered heavy enough
until recenty to support the traf-
fic. With the steady growth of
the middle west In agricultural
and merchandise products and oil
traffic it has been found necessary
to Increase the weight of rail
which now becomes a standard on
all main lines.
In the early days of railroad
building, 65 - pound rail was the
heaviest used on western lines.
Heavier locomotives and steel cars
with increased loading capacity, [
have made heavier rails and bal-'
last necessary in modern railroad-1
ing.
